Walter L. Reed went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at the age of 81.
He was born on December 15, 1935, in Otsego the only son of Walter C. and Florence (Julien) Reed. On February 12, 1955 he married Vivian Walters and they enjoyed 62 years together. Walt worked at Hammond Machinery in Otsego for 39 years, retiring in 1995. He worshiped at At The Master’s Feet Discipleship Ministry and so enjoyed his church family. He also kept in touch with many of his high school graduates enjoying lunch every month with them. His family was precious to him, enjoying many get-togethers. Walt also had a strong love of nature, particularly his birds and built many bird houses and feeders for them. He looked forward every spring to see the baby fawns and made sure the corn went out every day to keep them in his woods.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian, children, Kathy (Ronnie) Brock, Karin (Al) Laws, Larry (Sherri) Reed and Loren (Cynthia) Reed. He had seven grandchildren that he loved deeply, Chad (Nancy) Laws, Alex (Tracy) Laws, Mariah (Dustin) Cook, Morgan (Tina) Reed, Marshall Reed, Whitney Reed and Abbie Reed; seven great-grandchildren, Haley, Douglas, Dakota, Atherton, Anders, Callie and Kayden; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Glenda Staley; many nieces and nephews and mothers of his grandchildren, Diana Reed and Tracey (Rick) Hurdelbrink.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Wilma Cushman, Donna Westfield, Peggy Rex, Linda Clock and infant sister, Mary Jean and daughter-in-law, Debbie (Morrell) Reed.
Friends may visit with Walt’s family from 4-7 P.M., Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastor Ray Brown officiating.
Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego Township.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Walt may be made to At The Master’s Feet Discipleship Ministry or

Our deepest sympathies for your loss. Your dad will be missed by many but by none as much as each of you. May all the great memories you have help you heal.

I just saw the obit online. Oh Vivian, I am so sorry. Walt was such a sweetheart! I had been meaning to phone you two, but just got busy with a multitude of things. When I first saw Walt’s name my first reaction was ‘Oh NO!.’ All along hoping it was a different one, not him. Am just heartbroken. Hugs & prayers to you & your family.

Our thoughts & prayers are with Aunt Viv, Kathy, Karin, Larry, & Loren with the passing of Uncle Walt. I enjoyed my time with Uncle Walt, he always took time to learn what I was doing. I enjoyed those conversations & the tips he would always pass along. He gave it a good fight & is in a better place tonight. God speed to the family – I will miss him.

Very sorry to learn of this fine man’s passing. We met two or three times in my life. Yet my Dad, Ralph Swinney was his friend. He spoke very highly of Mr. Reed. When we met at his funeral, I had a chance to express my appreciation for his kindness and friendship with my Dad. He was very gracious and kind to me then as well as when we met when I was in high school. Now those two can resume there friendship up there. Thank you for the smiles
Mr. Reed. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Reed family.
