Vance C. Swope

Vance Chester Swope passed away January 28, 2020 in Plainwell. Vance was born September 13, 1935, the son of Earl and Thelma (Decker) Swope, in Needmore, PA into a hard-working rural farming family and was a 1953 graduate of Green Hill High School. Many of the family, including Vance, went on to become educators. Vance headed west from Fulton County in the late summer of 1953 to attend Fort Wayne Bible College in Fort Wayne, IN. That fall, he met the love of his life, Marian Joan Haffner of Plainwell, MI and they were married on June 7, 1958 in Fort Wayne. Vance also attended Shippensburg University and received a master’s degree from Western Michigan University before settling in Plainwell in 1962, where he lived ever since.

Vance loved kids and was a fixture as a teacher in the Otsego Public Schools for 32 years, retiring in 1995. Vance and Marian have also been active members of the First Baptist Church of Plainwell for nearly 60 years, where Vance helped construct the church’s current sanctuary in the 1960’s and was a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. Vance was proud of his Pennsylvania farming roots and employed them by planting a large garden each year, canning and sharing the harvest with family and friends. He was also a regular entrant in the Plainwell Memorial Day Parade, driving his Farmall and Ford tractors in the parade before hosting a large annual barbecue at their home.

The most beloved thing on this Earth to Vance was his family. He was much loved by his sons and daughters-in-law, Steve (Becky) of Elkhart, IN; Eric (Roshan) of Harrisville, NH; and Mike (Dani) of Portland, OR. Vance absolutely adored his nine grandchildren and their spouses, recently enjoying a reunion of the whole gang for a summer week on Lake Michigan in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The grandkids will miss his love and warmth greatly: Tim (Chelsey), Kyle (Brenna), Carson, Katrina, Stephanie (Matt) Ciesielski, Trevor, Maya, Molly, and Natalie. Vance also remained close to his siblings, Richard (JoAnn), Watson, and Nellie (Pieter) Vels. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Marvin and Foster. Over the years, Vance was also a mentor, and father-like figure to many others.

Vance went to be with his Lord on January 28, 2020 after spending the previous week surrounded by his loving wife Marian, his three sons and their wives, and many other family members. His faith was solidly in Jesus Christ and we take comfort in knowing he is in the presence of the God he served. His kindness, generosity and warmth will be missed by all who knew him.

Friends may visit with Vance’s family from 3-5 PM, Sunday, February 2, 2020 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 A.M., Monday, February 3, 2020 at the First Baptist Church in Plainwell with Pastor George Osborn officiating.

Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell.

Contributions in memory of Vance may be made to the First Baptist Church of Plainwell or to Ethnos360 for Steven and Becky Swope.

Messages of condolence may be posted at www.WinkelFuneralHome.com.

I am very sorry for your loss. I had your Father as a 5th grade teacher, and remember him from the ballpark growing up. I am now a curriculum director and often reflect upon him as one of my fondest K-12 memories and the warm qualities he embraced as an educator. May you be comforted by the loving memories, family, and tradition he leaves behind.

Sending love and prayers to the entire Swope family. He was one of the best teachers and I was honored to be in his 5th grade class. He truly touched many lives and I have many fond memories of my time in his classroom. Back when teachers had more freedom, had fun, and people weren’t so easily offended. To the family of Mr. Swope,

I too had Mr. Swope as my fifth grade teacher. He not only shared his kindness and his humor, but he transformed my life. He brought me out if my shell. He inspired me. When asked, “Who was the teacher that made a difference in your life?” My first answer is always Vance Swope. I am in the midst of my 24th year of teaching, and I can only pray that I have had the kind of impact on a child the way Vance did on so many. I’m thankful that I had the chance to tell him so about ten years ago. He was a great man. May God grant you peace and comfort in this time of loss.

I worked with Vance for many years at Dix St and OMS . He was a very caring teacher and thoughtful person but also had a delightful sense of humor.

Darl appreciated all that he did at Memorial Park getting the diamonds ready for the softball games that Darl umpired for many years.

He was so proud of all of his children and grandchildren and his sweet wife, Marion. Remember the happy memories that you shared and the laughter. Sending much love and sympathy and may you feel the prayers being said for you during this difficult time. God bless you.

I had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Swope for many years as a young man growing up. His son Eric and I learned to fish for trout in Silver Creek out behind their house. He was very kind and often transported us to various locations to fish. I often reflect back fondly on those days. I specifically remember him (kiddingly) chastising me for swearing one time when I had said we were fishing at Allegan “Dam”. As a 13 or 14 year old I briefly wasn’t sure he was joking until I saw the smile! Rest In Peace Mr Swope.

It was evident that he didn’t feel so great that day but he took his turn in sharing all the good times and memories of years gone by. I wasn’t very old when you moved away but even at a young age I gained so much respect for Vance. That respect and those wonderful memories will be cherished forever. God Bless you and the family. To the family of Vance Swope,

I, too, had Mr. Swope in the fifth grade. Many years later, my kids also had him in Middle School. He was the best of the best. His kindness and compassion helped me build confidence to work on and push through some problems I dealt with being an insecure fifth grader. The many years later that my kids had him, he remembered that, and was still helping and teaching my kids in that same caring, compassionate manner to be the best they could be. Thank you so much Mr. Swope for all you were to so many. Your work on earth was done exceptionally well. Rest in peace to a very dear man.
