Valerie I. Davis

Val passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family Friday, April 29, 2016 following a courageous battle with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).

She was born July 24, 1968 in Grand Rapids the daughter of John and Marcia (Fancher) Manke. Val attended St. Stan’s Catholic School until the 8

th

grade and was a 1986 Hopkins High School graduate. She then went on to attend Chic Cosmetology College in Kalamazoo. On October 14, 1989 at St Stan’s Catholic Church in Hilliards she married James Davis. Val had worked at salons in Dorr and Otsego before opening her own salon in her home once she began her family with Jim. In 2006 she started a daycare out of her home and had taken care of many area children over the last 10 years.

Val loved attending her children’s sporting events and was always the loudest cheerleader in the stands. She had been involved with 4-H, post prom, went on many field trips and had helped with the wrestling club.

Val helped with all the chores on the farm and was a great cook. She enjoyed going to garage sales, camping every father’s day weekend in Mackinac, collecting shoes and purses, celebrating Christmas with her family; going to the fair, especially to see the animals and concerts and loved indulging her sweet tooth with peeps and jelly bellies. Val always had a huge smile on her face and loved life.

Surviving are her husband; children, Trevor (Beth Hill) of Parchment, Alyssa of Kalamazoo and Hailey and Alex; her parents of Hilliards; siblings, Linda (Mike) Heppe of Hilliards and John (Kandi) Manke of Hopkins; Jim’s parents, Dick (Sylvia) Davis of Otsego; his siblings, Rick (Tina) Davis, Vicky Kent, Sheri O’Reilly and Julie Kubiak; his grandmother, Anne Davis and her best friend, Kelly Smart.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Friends may visit with Val’s family from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. on Monday, May 9, 2016 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Otsego with Father Donald Klingler and Deacon Russ Pogodzinski officiating.

Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego Township.

Jim, Trevor, Alyssa, Hailey & Alex I am so deeply sorry for your loss. My heart aches for you. Val was one of a kind full of life, love & spirit, always had a smile. I started going to Val when she worked on the hill in Dorr then to their new place in Dorr, followed her to Otsego then to her house. Even after moving to Texas we stayed in contact & when I came home to MI I would always come out to the house. She would always try to talk me into different colors & styles with my hair.(lol) Each time she got pregnant she was so excited & I knew she would be an excellent mother & that she was & so in love with Jim. One last memory I have when my Mother passed away in 1996 she offered to go the funeral home & do my Mother’s hair, we talked about that all the time, that was very special of her.

Val Heaven got another angel keep smilin RIP

I recieved this when my mother passed away and always liked it.

Remember me when you hear the wind blow.

I am with God, I need you to know.

He called my name, and I went to see

If the voice I heard was speaking to me.

He took my hand, we walked along

The road to heaven, where I belong.

The angles sang so sweet and clear.

They sang of love and that Jesus is near.

I felt his touch, I saw his face,

I knew in an instant I was in his grace.

He spoke to me, I heard him say,

You are home now child, you have found your way.

So remember me when you hear the wind blow.

I am home now with God, I need you to know.

Words cannot express our sympathies. Val was a great friend and a wonderful person who will be sorely missed by many. The nice thing about that is she left such a huge wake of friends behind that I know your family won’t be without help and support, love and prayers. Please let us know if there is anything you need. As others have said: ‘one day at a time’. Peace to you all.

So sorry to read this news today. Val was the only one I allowed to cut my long hair short many many years ago. She was an awesome hair cutting friend to us when she worked in Dorr. Just want her family to know that we will thinking of them and keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

To the Davis family, I was so sorry to hear about Val’s illness and passing. I always enjoyed seeing and talking to her when she came into my classroom. I had all four Davis children in school and they remain one of my favorite families. She leaves a wonderful legacy in her incredible children and I hope they and Jim find comfort in knowing how much Val was loved and admired by all who knew her.
