Shirley A. Menck

Shirley Ann Menck, 82, of Otsego, Michigan and winter resident of Arcadia, Florida, passed away December 8, 2021, at the DeSoto Memorial Hospital in Florida.

She was born August 24, 1939, in Kalamazoo, Michigan to James and Madeline George. She attended Vine Street Elementary School and was a 1957 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School.  She married William G. Menck, Jr. on April 12, 1958, at the Stockbridge Methodist Church in Kalamazoo. She enjoyed a variety of jobs throughout her working years which started in 1955 as a Clerk and Switchboard Operator for Montgomery Wards where she met her beloved husband, Bill. She then worked as a switchboard operator for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company for a year before becoming a file clerk in the Charge Account Dept of the First National Bank. In the fall of 1961, she once more changed employers and went to work for the Simpson Lee Paper Company in Vicksburg, MI where she was the switchboard operator and receptionist. In 1968, she became a Clerk with the US Post Office. 1976 saw her joining the Otsego Public School Department as a Bus Driver. She retired in 1999.

The most important thing to Shirley was her family and her faith in God.  The most cherished gift you could give her was to gather family members and have a meal and fellowship together. The more the merrier. She also enjoyed sewing, quilting and spending time with friends at her winter home in Florida. She had a strong faith in God and was very active with her church.

She is survived by her husband, William Menck Jr, her children, Kenneth and Carol Menck, Douglas and Suzy Menck, Brenda and Gayla Mender; four grandchildren, Joseph Menck, Elisa Menck, Daniel Menck, and Jacob Mender; brothers, James W. George, Jr and Jack George and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents as well as her two sisters, Janet Wetherbee and Carol J. Allen.

The Lord is my Sheperd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside still waters. He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Michigan.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to:

Shirley loved God and shared her absolute faith. I used to call on her to pray for me, which I know she did with all her heart. I have one of her wedding quilts, and am honored to have it. Shirley was a good friend to my parents , especially my mom. Shirley is missed and continues to be loved.

Shirley was both of my son’s bus driver when they were in school until they were old enough to drive themselves to school. She was one of the sweetest and kindest ladies and a very faithful Christian. After my boys quit riding the bus I would only see her occasionally maybe at the grocery store or out and about down town. I really missed standing at the door and waving to her after she had the kids all loaded on the bus. May God give her family the strength and comfort they all need in the days to come.

Our kids loved Shirley as their bus driver. She made every kid feel special and always greeted them with a smile. May God bless all of her family.

To the Menck family,

I want to offer my sincerest sympathy in the passing of Shirley. She was all three of my kid’s bus driver for many years. She was a true Christian woman and had such a kind, sweet demeanor. Shirley always offered a smile and a pleasant exchange to the kids getting on and off the bus. She went above and beyond her job as a bus driver with the kids. A couple incidences that come to mind with my kids are prime examples. When my daughter was just starting school, she fell asleep in the back of the bus and didn’t get off at her stop. When the route was done and Shirley found her sleeping , she called and was very apologetic. She brought her right to my door in her own vehicle. Another time my kids were all sick at home so they couldn’t enjoy the Halloween festivities at school. After Shirley finished her afternoon run, she stopped by the house all dressed as a happy witch and gave the kids treats. Shirley gave her best to all. She will be deeply missed.
