Ryan was one of my freestyle wrestling coaches. He was a great guy and a good friend. I haven’t seen him in years, but the last time I saw him, he said come on over Ang there’s beer in the fridge in the garage and make yourself at home. I never did make it over to have a beer with them. My heart breaks for his family. Sending love and prayers to his family and friends.

As so many before and some after, my children had Ryan as their PE teacher at PMS. I did not know him well. We are deeply saddened by this tragic and unexpected accident and my boys would like to express how highly they thought of Mr. Meert. They remember Ryan as a humorous, fair, and motivating teacher, always with an encouraging word for his students. Our most heartfelt condolences and prayers for comfort go out to Ryan’s family, friends, and all those who knew and loved him.

My husband and I had the privilege of teaching with Ryan at Plainwell Middle School for many years. He made work fun and I appreciated his sense of humor. I have fond memories of attending MAPHERD Conferences together. I will also never forget when he told me, “I don’t know quite how to say this but your Mom’s Celebration of Life was the best memorial I have ever attended.” He appreciated the good food, good drinks, and good music. He said it was actually quite uplifting as far as those things go and I took that as a huge compliment. That was exactly my intent! We appreciated your friendship, Ryan. You will be so missed by so many. Your positive energy and how you loved so fiercely will live on in your children and all who were lucky enough to call you friend or family. Meert Family, Mike and I are so very sorry for this overwhelming loss. We will be lifting you up to the Lord.

I struggle to find any words as times like this leave so many of us silent in sadness and pain. For what we all feel, especially the family, cannot be explained but only felt. The emotions run deeper than you ever realized they could and we are left to sort through them, each of us in our own way. Hoping for strength as you go through this process.

Ryan was fun to be around and knew how to make you laugh. Heck, sometimes all it took was to hear him laugh and then you would start laughing! He had that effect on you and he seemed to sense when someone needed it. He was a friend to me and supportive when I needed it.

I will always enjoy the memories I have of Ryan and I am very glad that I had the opportunity to know him and share some really great times with him over the years. Thank you, Ryan.

My Starr students loved having Ryan as their Phys-Ed teacher. He was always fun, funny, and energetic. I was a happy to get to know him, and so glad that our Starr students had the privilege of having him for their teacher. I believe he told me that in elementary school he was often in trouble and that at home he was called, “Think-Tank Hank,” because of all of all of the recesses that he had to spend in “Think Tank” for different antics! The world will be a little less bright with his passing.

This past year he showed my daughters’s family that kindness multiple times. She was in the hospital several times during the month of December and Without hesitation he snowplowed their driveway time and time again so they could come home without anything to worry about. Meert Family,

We are so sorry for your loss. Ryan was a great guy and our family is going to miss him so much! He had the best sense of humor and he always made us laugh. I asked our boys to share a memory of Ryan…

Kyle: Ever since Kyle was a little boy, whenever Ryan would see him, he would yell, “Kyyyyyyyyyle”. It didn’t matter where he was or who was around, he yelled as loud as he could!

Josh: Josh was in Ryan’s PE class the year that Covid hit and classes were being done via Zoom. The students put their name into their Chromebook and it would show up on the screen. Unbeknownst to Josh, Ryan had changed Josh’s screen name just as class was about to start. When Ryan took a roll call, to check attendance, it took Josh and the rest of the kids in class to figure out who the “new” kid was.

Joe and I have memories from hanging out with Ryan and his family at the Allegan County Fair, when we participated in 4-H; Canton Cup soccer tournament; and at the farm.

RIP Hank

Love,

The Chapman Family

To the Meert family,

I have not met you, nor did I ever meet Ryan. I accompanied a friend (Ron MacVean) to Ryan’s service at the Radiant Church. The service was so impressive! Many mentions of Ryan’s life’s memorable moments among

family, friends and work environments. The video displaying so many captured photos of a life well lived and an individual well respected and loved. I came away feeling like I had met and known Ryan. Such a warm, and loving tribute to him. Not to forget to mention enroute to the church seeing the 2 parked farm equipment vehicles on either side of M-89 near the Hillside Cemetery. A warm and loving send-off. Tributes done with class! Thank you. Sincerely,

I had the privilege of knowing Ryan since he was a middle school student. Working with him at the middle school these past many years has been a blessing. His dedication to kids, his own and at school, was beyond measure. They all knew he loved and respected them and wanted them to succeed. He had a great sense of humor and was just a great person to be around. He will be missed by us all. I pray that his family will find peace knowing that we support and join them in their grief.
