Renny R. Ransbottom
Renny passed away Thursday, August 6, 2015 at his home in Plainwell.
He was born March 24, 1951 in Plainwell the son of Lester and Phyllis (Madden) Ransbottom. For more than 28 years he owned and operated the Third Base Grocery in Plainwell. He was also active with the Michigan Association of School Boards, having served on the Board of Directors. He had also been Chair of their Government Relations Committee and been a mentor with Members Assisting Peers. He had received the MASB Level 7 Presidents Award and The MASB Advocacy and Data Specialty Awards.
Renny served his community as President of the Otsego School Board, Treasurer of the Otsego Public School Foundation, Vice President of the Otsego District Library Board and was a member of “Band of Friends”.
On March 25, 1977 at the United Methodist Church in Plainwell he married Phyllis Lynn Hummel who survives. Also surviving are his children, Michael Ransbottom of Otsego and Katherine (Austin Wiggins) Ransbottom of Plainwell. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has taken place. No public services are scheduled at this time.

My deepest condolences to Phyllis and family at the loss of a great man. He served the community in so many capacities and gave of himself tirelessly to make Otsego a great place to live and to raise children. His legacy will live on for an eternity in the lives that he made better with his service.
I had the pleasure of working with him on the Otsego Public Schools Foundation and his absence will have a tremendous affect on our board and the children and staff in the school system.

It is sad day hearing that Renny was passed away. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. He was so involved with committees and boards in Otsego. It was his passion and he enjoyed everything he was a part of. We worked together on the OHS combined class reunions and he was always very helpful and supportive. He will be missed in the community.

I am so saddened by the passing of Renny. I had the pleasure of working with him at the store for years and he truly was a person I looked forward to seeing weekly. Heaven gained a great man today. Linda and I are honored to have been able to call Renny our friend. But he was so much more than a friend. Renny was truly an amazing guy that loved his family, friends, relatives and community. He was a great father, husband, and friend that enjoyed life and gave so much of himself to the school district and education on the whole. His dedication and legacy will continue for many years to come,. I had the privilege of being a family member, I enjoyed spending time at the store sharing our many thoughts, stories, and discussions through the years. I also had the joy of the many close knit family activities we shared growing up. His love for his family was so very evident, we lost a great guy way too soon, he will be truly missed.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Renny. Renny played football when I was coaching and he was a joy to have on the team, always saying or doing things to keep the team loose. When I would run into Renny over the past years he would always make mention of things he would have done differtly if he was the coach. We have lost a good man!

I am truly saddened on the loss of such an amazing man! My heart goes out to Phyllis, Michael and Katherine. Our community and Otsego Public Schools will never be the same without his leadership, dedication and devotion. I once visited Renny in the hospital and remember him saying, “I don’t have time for this. I have to get out of here. I have a school board meeting tonight.” And that was the truth. He didn’t miss those meetings. That was Renny. That was who he was.
I am grateful for the many fond memories we had growing up including spending the holidays together and the great times at Clear Lake. Renny loved his family and always worked hard for them.
Our community has lost a great man! He will truly be missed. I am honored and proud to call him my family. He will remain in our hearts forever.

To the Ransbottom Family:
I do not know if Renny had mentioned me, but I was one of his roommates up at Central. We lived together on and off for most of our time up at Central. We all affectionately called him Reggie. It is with deep regret that I found out about Renny’s passing from another of our roommates, Art Ayers. Needles to say, I was stunned and saddened. It seems like just a moment ago we were 18 and invincible.

I was so sorry to hear of Renny’s death. I had the opportunity as did many of my fellow board members from Martin and throughout Allegan County on AAESA as well as MASB events. I’m afraid that I didn’t know Renny very well, except when I stopped by his store every so often in Plainwell. I remember the speech he gave at the opening ceremony at the new Otsego High School, and I told him that it was a great speech straight from the heart. He seemed to be very committed to our local kids education. GOD BLESS you Renny- and may God give your family the strength to carry on.

Renny and his family with I and my family have held down 2 corners of the 10th St and Marsh Rd intersection in Plainwell with our businesses for several years and as a result have formed a genuine friendship. All of us at Bluegrass feel sorrow and remorse from Renny’s passing because it truly hurts to lose a friend.

My thoughts and prayers are with Renny’s family. He was a champion for the children of Otsego in many ways. I will miss him teasing me, saying, “if there is food and money being given out, I’m sure Amy will be there.” He will be missed!

I am so saddened by the passing of Renny. I had the pleasure of working with him at the store for years and he truly was a person I looked forward to seeing weekly. I will miss him picking on me and trying to ruffle my feathers each week. 🙂 His love for his family and community was evident in all he did. Heaven gained a great man today. Linda and I are honored to have been able to call Renny our friend. But he was so much more than a friend. He was a mentor to Me and Linda when we became officers on the Plainwell Band Boosters board. He helped with many projects and ideas we came up with. I was so sorry to hear of Renny’s passing. For years I used to leave early for work so that I would have time to talk with Renny at Third Base. We didn’t always see eye to eye, but he was always fun to listen to. A good man gone too soon. Deepest condolences to his family.

Renny was truly an amazing guy that loved his family, friends, relatives and community. He was a great father, husband, and friend that enjoyed life and gave so much of himself to the school district and education on the whole. His dedication and legacy will continue for many years to come,. I had the privilege of being a family member, I enjoyed spending time at the store sharing our many thoughts, stories, and discussions through the years. I also had the joy of the many close knit family activities we shared growing up. His love for his family was so very evident, we lost a great guy way too soon, he will be truly missed.

Dear Phyllis and Family,
We are so sorry to hear of Renny’s passing. Without a doubt, Renny was a true “Champion for Children”. He dedicated his life to serving Otsego Public Schools, as well as, the entire community of Otsego. Otsego is a better place due to our good friend.
He was like a big brother to me, affectionately nicknamed him “Pa”. I value the numerous conversations we had while he was School Board President.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Renny. Renny played football when I was coaching and he was a joy to have on the team, always saying or doing things to keep the team loose. When I would run into Renny over the past years he would always make mention of things he would have done differtly if he was the coach. We have lost a good man!

I am truly saddened on the loss of such an amazing man! My heart goes out to Phyllis, Michael and Katherine. Our community and Otsego Public Schools will never be the same without his leadership, dedication and devotion. I once visited Renny in the hospital and remember him saying, “I don’t have time for this. I have to get out of here. I have a school board meeting tonight.” And that was the truth. He didn’t miss those meetings. That was Renny. That was who he was.
I am grateful for the many fond memories we had growing up including spending the holidays together and the great times at Clear Lake. Renny loved his family and always worked hard for them.
Our community has lost a great man! He will truly be missed. I am honored and proud to call him my family. He will remain in our hearts forever.

To the Ransbottom Family:
I do not know if Renny had mentioned me, but I was one of his roommates up at Central. We lived together on and off for most of our time up at Central. We all affectionately called him Reggie. It is with deep regret that I found out about Renny’s passing from another of our roommates, Art Ayers. Needles to say, I was stunned and saddened. It seems like just a moment ago we were 18 and invincible.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family. Renny was a good guy and a good friend. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was so sorry to hear of Renny’s death. I had the opportunity as did many of my fellow board members from Martin and throughout Allegan County on AAESA as well as MASB events. Renny put kindness and teaching above all other things and was a great model for me as a new board member. His contribution to schools in Otsego, Allegan County, and throughout Michigan will be missed.

When we each had our class reunions last year and 4 years ago, he made a special effort to make time to give us a tour of the high school and middle school. I’m afraid that I didn’t know Renny very well, except when I stopped by his store every so often in Plainwell. I remember the speech he gave at the opening ceremony at the new Otsego High School, and I told him that it was a great speech straight from the heart. He seemed to be very committed to our local kids education. GOD BLESS you Renny- and may God give your family the strength to carry on.

Renny and his family with I and my family have held down 2 corners of the 10th St and Marsh Rd intersection in Plainwell with our businesses for several years and as a result have formed a genuine friendship. All of us at Bluegrass feel sorrow and remorse from Renny’s passing because it truly hurts to lose a friend.
