Raymond Henry Malvitz, DDS, of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Rose Arbor Hospice with his family at his side. Dr. Malvitz was born August 9, 1928 in Inkster, Michigan, son of the late Henry and Bertha (Pardieke) Malvitz. He graduated from Pharmacy School, Ferris State University, Big Rapids, MI in 1950. Lt., stationed in Germany. In 1959 he graduated from the University of Detroit Dental School, Detroit, MI. He practiced Dentistry in Plymouth, MI for one year, then moved to Otsego, MI and had a Dental Practice there for 32 years, retiring in 1992. Dr. Malvitz was a long time member of Zion Lutheran Church in Kalamazoo. He was a member of the Kalamazoo Valley District Dental Association, serving as President in 1976, and was also a life member of the Michigan Dental Association and the American Dental Association. He served on the Otsego School Board for 18 years and was the President of the Board for four years. He was an active member of the Otsego Rotary Club from 1960 to 2003, serving as President from 1966-1969, then again from 2005 to the present time. He was a Paul Harris recipient. For several years he served as Chairman of the United Way in Otsego and the Planning Commission in Otsego. After retiring in Sept. 1992, he worked at the Kalamazoo Valley Community College as a Clinical Instructor in the Dental Hygiene Program and also for the Migrant Program of Bangor, MI for ten years. Dr. and Mrs. Malvitz wintered in Barefoot Bay, FL for ten years and for five years in Pam Bay, FL as Florida residents. He was an active member of the Rotary Club of Melbourne Beach, FL and served as President in 2003-2004. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Sebastian, FL during these years. Dr. and Mrs. Malvitz returned to Michigan in 2005. He was a loyal fan of the U of M Wolverines for 65 years. He enjoyed hiking and backpacking. Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Rita; three children, Dr. Thomas (Christine) Malvitz of Ada, MI, Lynn Khadaja of Haslet, MI and Susan (Dr. Edmund) Rosser of Okemos, MI; three step-sons, Bruce (Ann) Niemi of Allegan, MI, Thomas (Joy) Niemi of Otsego and Timothy (Sherry) Niemi of Kalamazoo, MI; also 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Norine Hinz, in 2002, and a grandson, Mitchell Niemi in 2005. At his request, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life Memorial Service will take place at Zion Lutheran Church, 2122 Bronson Blvd, Kalamazoo, MI on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, with Pastor Louis Grother and Pastor Larry Brelje officiating. The family will greet friends from 9:30 A.M. until the time of the service at 10:30 A.M. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, at 1:30 P.M., with family members in attendance. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Otsego Rotary Scholarship Fund or Zion Lutheran Braille Workers.
