Michael L. VanSparrentak

Michael L. VanSparrentak, affectionately known as Mike, passed away on March 1, 2025, at the age of 71 in Grand Rapids. 

Born on August 20, 1953, in Kalamazoo, he was the son of Henry "Hank" and Juanita (Holmes) VanSparrentak, both of whom have preceded him in death. Mike dedicated an impressive 42 years of his life to Van’s Auto Repair, where his commitment to his work earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues and customers alike. He retired in 2015, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication. 

A passionate racing enthusiast, Mike was actively involved at Kalamazoo Speedway, where he raced super late model cars. His love for the sport extended beyond his own racing days; after retiring from driving, he enthusiastically supported his sons as they took to the track. His adventurous spirit also shone through in his hobbies, including a fondness for hunting and fishing, as well as tinkering in his garage. Mike relished the joy of watching his grandchildren participate in various sports, finding delight in their achievements and passions. 

On May 4, 1974, in Alamo, he married Kathy Mearing, his devoted wife for over 50 years. Also surviving are his children, Chad (Andrea) VanSparrentak of Alamo, Kyle (Sherria) VanSparrentak of Alamo, and Corey (Charlotte) VanSparrentak of Otsego. His legacy continues through his four grandchildren, Elise (Payton), Ashton, Brooklyn, and Michael; step-mother, Dolores VanSparrentak, as well as his siblings, Brenda Pickard and Scott (Tammy) VanSparrentak along with several nieces and nephews. 

Friends may visit with Mike's family from 4-6 PM, Sunday, March 9, 2025, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, where a funeral service will take place at 11:00 A.M., Monday, March 10, 2025, with Don Porter officiating.  

Burial will follow at Alamo Center Cemetery in Alamo Township. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mike may be directed to the Alamo Community Foundation.
