Merl
Merl R. Lindsey
Merl passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at his home in Otsego.
He was born July 16, 1950 in Plainwell, the son of Carl and Dorraine (Denslow) Lindsey. Merl served his country in the US Army during Vietnam. For 35 years he owned and operated Lindsey Appliance Service. In his spare time he enjoyed farming especially growing corn and soybeans. More than anything Merl loved his family and no matter how busy he was he always made time to lend a helping hand or attend events for his grandchildren. On September 19, 1970 at Otsego United Methodist Church he married Sue Ann Kelsey who survives.
Also surviving are his 3 sons, Eric (Brenda) Lindsey, Kyle (Stacey) Lindsey and Cory (Ashley) Lindsey; 6 grandchildren, Zoey, Madison, Emma, Alyssa, Nolan and Owen; a special niece, Shelly (Chris) Turley and their children, Steven Kendra and Ryan; 3 brothers; 2 sisters along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Dorraine Lindsey.
Friends may visit with Merl’s family Friday, July 24, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-9 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.
A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating.
Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

or to the charity of your choice.

We are so stunned and deeply saddened to hear of Merle’s passing. Just talked to him a few days ago about an appliance issue. What a nice man he was. Honest, friendly, dependable and knew everything about the business. I could always trust Merl to do the best by us. Merl could tell you everything about any appliance problem you had and he knew how to fix it. I had complete faith in him. We are sending our most sincere sympathies to the entire family. Merl was a wonderful person. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. We are so sorry.

So saddened to hear this. Merl is in all my school class pictures. As farm kids we had a lot in common. We spent many an hour on the school bus. He was one of the nicest, kindest, good guys I had the pleasure to grow up with. I am so sorry Sue, and will be thinking of you and your family. God bless.

Like anyone who had the pleasure to know or meet Mr. Lindsey his passing came with such sad news. My heart and prayers go out to his family and wife. On several occasions he came to our food pantry at Christian Neighbors in Plainwell to fix our cooler and freezers. Actually he was just there a few weeks ago. Never did he charge us for parts or his time. He was such a gift to us and to our community.
He was honest, funny, and when you closed the door behind you leaving Mr. Lindsey at your home or business you knew you would come home to a working appliance and he would eventually send you a bill (except at the pantry). He often talked about his family and grandchildren. He will be missed. There will never be another Mr. Lindsey. May God be close to your family and bring you a sense of peace that can only come from God.

Mr. Lindsey was just at my home on a service call maybe a month ago. He has been here previously, and he was the best in the business. He was fair, trust worthy and he always took his time. I was shocked. & saddened to see about Merl’s passing. I have known him from riding the bus to school and less than 2 weeks ago he was fixing my daughters dryer. & I came in and we talked & laughed – . He was always a kind & gentle soul. We are so sorry to hear this, Merl was just at our house less than a month ago and seemed WONDERFUL. My husband had just had knee surgery and they were joking about Age and Recovery. Peace be with you and your family at this most difficult time.

To the Lindsey family: I am really sorry for your loss. Merl was one of the good ones. We still have a dishwasher that is running on spare parts that Merl found in his shop. My father was in the same business and I talked to him about how I should have learned at my father’s side. He said, “If you had, than I wouldn’t be fixing your dishwasher.” And… I would probably have not met Merl. He will be missed.

Surely if the were a Andy of (Otsego )Mayberry, Merl would be a star in the show. Merl was what growing up in a small town represents. Everyone knew him, and loved having him come to repair their appliances. His stories were always great, and his word always true. Dear Lindsey Family: Merl was much more than an appliance repairman, he was a Goodwill Ambassador to the community, who spread joy and friendship to all he knew. He was always there to help repair our appliances, but never too busy to tell a funny story or spread his humor to all he came to know. Losing Merl must be devastating to his family, as it is to our family, and the community he loved, and was loved back. Rest in peace our dear friend, you will be missed, but always remembered.

We were very saddened, and surprised, to see that Merl passed. He was just at our home in April doing a repair on our washer and refrigerator. I just had Merl fix out refrigerator,so had a nice visit with him more than once. What a talent he had. We loved talking to him when he would come to the house. He had such a great personality . What an awful shock! My sincere sympathies to the Lindsey family. Merl always shared a funny story or two every time he came to work on our appliances. He was honest and I never worried about leaving him to finish a job if I had to go somewhere before he was finished. He did great work and took pride in doing “an honest day’s work for an honest wage”. Our family will really miss him! Our community has suffered a significant loss. I worked with Merl for many years supply him with the parts he needed, we became friends over the phone, we laughed and worked out problems together, it was always a pleasure when he would call in to ask something. Each of the previous posts describe Merle perfectly. He was a talented man and a great asset to us homeowners in the area. My family and neighbors used his expertise many times over and always left a conversation with him smiling. I loved his stories and that special smile he always had when he talked about his love for his family. RIP Merle and give my dad a hug for me. I am so sorry to have read that Merle had passed away. Merle was so well thought of that you can rest assured he will be greatly missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
While related we were not close. If we met on the street we would not have recognized one another. My father was Elbert, one of the sons of Irving and Alice Lindsey (Willard, Julia, and Elbert were others in that generation.) I am the last one of that generation of the Lindsey clan because I was so much younger than the “boys”. Lavern Lindsey was my half brother, the others in that generation were Carl, Norman and Irving Myers, and Lavern. At one time the line of Lindsey families along Star Road (the name before it was renamed) covered several farms. .

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lindsey family. My wife Judy and I were so sad to hear of Merl’s passing.
We had only met Merl once, as he was recommended by a friend to make repairs to our dryer. We immediately thought, “What a great guy!” Not only did he show me how to repair my dryer should the same parts wear out again (Merl said, “And they will wear out again”), he also gave me the confidence to tackle my ice-maker plumbing issues on my own. I’ve never had much of a knack for plumbing. Thank you Merl! Our ice-maker has never made better ice cubes.

There is nothing more I can say about Mr. Lindsey that hasn’t been said. He was a great man that adored his family. That in itself says a lot. He always had a story about one of them. By now you all know how much of an impacted Merl had on this town & all the friends that he has helped through the years………He was the only repair man I enjoyed coming to the house. We had a standing joke……….I told him once ” did ya get my Memo” he said “for what?” I said it read he was not able to retire till I was gone.We had a good laugh about it, Also everytime he came I had to tell him my dishwasher was still working that he had fixed almost 15 yrs. ago with a paper clip, As he always would say ” that is some tricks of the trade” Thanks Merl for not only being the best repair man But the best of the best!!!! always made you clients glad to see you……………….

Our daughter, Gina, just called us last week to get Merl’s telephone number because she needed her dryer fixed. He fixed her dryer just this Monday before he passed on Tues. She was telling us what a great chat they had had. As all of these messages express, he will be missed sooooo much and our community was truly blessed to have had his expertise to count on for the many years we did. What a wonderful man. We have sweet memories of your family at Bronson Hospital while our little Taylor was so ill and your son was going thru a very hard time. We will never forget sharing hugs and prayers with you!!! Merl was simply the best. He was a rare combination of professional skill, experience, honesty, friendliness, advice, humor, and philosophy all rolled into one. He was quick to respond to his clients needs, and while curing an ailing appliance, he could also dispense common sense about a wide range of life topics. He was fun, fair, and reliable. Merl will be sorely missed by all his family, friends, and clients. God speed, Merl.

I had the honor of assisting with the service today for Merl. Listening to all the wonderful stories from family and friends, especially from Merl’s Grandchildren brought tears to my eyes and am sure many others. I sure hope I can leave this love to my wife, kids and grandkids the way Merl did. What a special man to so many that left such a lasting impression that will never be replaced. He was also the repairman I called for appliance repair as probably most of the Otsego area. Rest in Peace to a perfect Gentleman!

When Merl came into our home to fix our broken appliances, he was friendly, honest and trustworthy.I was the second generation that called him, and so did my daughters family. I also shared many bus rides with the Lindsey “kids” over the years, but the more recent memories of a man of integrity running a much needed business in our community outshine those early years. Merl loved a puzzle, and our 30 year old washer gave him many moments of puzzle solving! His determination, intelligence and perseverance were always evident. I love that he continued to work with us, encouraging us to “hang on to the old appliances” as long as we could. What a unique perspective to have in 2015. He made friends with many, showing his kindness and care through his hard work in our homes. God’s comfort and love to your family.

Our family had merl in “the family” for yrs. He was great at his job and just a joy to know period. Learned of his passing just today, and was thinking of him this past week. God bless his family, we’ve lost a great man but his wings could carry us all.

I am so sorry to hear of Merl’s passing. He was genuine in every way. I spent a lot of time with Merl while taking care of his father Carl. Merl was always busy working but came everyday to see his father sometimes up to four or five times a day. While taking care of Carl, I spent a great memorial day with Merl and Sue’s family. The entire family filled a room with so much love. Merl taught me how to drive the combine with Carl’s help of course. This memory I will cherish forever. I will never forget Merl and his entire family. I was always treated as family. After Carl’s death Merl would still come to Kalamazoo and fix my mom’s appliances. My heart aches of sadness but I am grateful that I was lucky enough to have had the opportunity to be blessed with Merl’s (and the Lindsey family) kindness. May god watch over you and help lead you through these difficult times.

He was born July 16, 1950 in Plainwell, the son of Carl and Dorraine (Denslow) Lindsey. Merl served his country in the US Army during Vietnam. For 35 years he owned and operated Lindsey Appliance Service. In his spare time he enjoyed farming especially growing corn and soybeans. More than anything Merl loved his family and no matter how busy he was he always made time to lend a helping hand or attend events for his grandchildren. On September 19, 1970 at Otsego United Methodist Church he married Sue Ann Kelsey who survives.
Also surviving are his 3 sons, Eric (Brenda) Lindsey, Kyle (Stacey) Lindsey and Cory (Ashley) Lindsey; 6 grandchildren, Zoey, Madison, Emma, Alyssa, Nolan and Owen; a special niece, Shelly (Chris) Turley and their children, Steven Kendra and Ryan; 3 brothers; 2 sisters along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Dorraine Lindsey.
Friends may visit with Merl’s family Friday, July 24, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-9 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.
A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at the Otsego United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Shaler officiating.
Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

We are so stunned and deeply saddened to hear of Merle’s passing. Just talked to him a few days ago about an appliance issue. What a nice man he was. Honest, friendly, dependable and knew everything about the business. I could always trust Merl to do the best by us. Merl could tell you everything about any appliance problem you had and he knew how to fix it. I had complete faith in him. We are sending our most sincere sympathies to the entire family. So saddened to hear this. Merl is in all my school class pictures. As farm kids we had a lot in common. We spent many an hour on the school bus. Like anyone who had the pleasure to know or meet Mr. Lindsey his passing came with such sad news. My heart and prayers go out to his family and wife. On several occasions he came to our food pantry at Christian Neighbors in Plainwell to fix our cooler and freezers. Actually he was just there a few weeks ago. Never did he charge us for parts or his time. He was such a gift to us and to our community.
He was honest, funny, and when you closed the door behind you leaving Mr. Lindsey at your home or business you knew you would come home to a working appliance and he would eventually send you a bill (except at the pantry). He often talked about his family and grandchildren. He will be missed. There will never be another Mr. Lindsey. May God be close to your family and bring you a sense of peace that can only come from God.

Mr. Lindsey was just at my home on a service call maybe a month ago. He has been here previously, and he was the best in the business. He was fair, trust worthy and he always took his time. I have known him from riding the bus to school and less than 2 weeks ago he was fixing my daughters dryer. & I came in and we talked & laughed – . He was always a kind & gentle soul. To the Lindsey family: I am really sorry for your loss. Merl was one of the good ones. We still have a dishwasher that is running on spare parts that Merl found in his shop. My father was in the same business and I talked to him about how I should have learned at my father’s side. He said, “If you had, than I wouldn’t be fixing your dishwasher.” And… I would probably have not met Merl. He will be missed.

Dear Lindsey Family: Merl was much more than an appliance repairman, he was a Goodwill Ambassador to the community, who spread joy and friendship to all he knew. He was always there to help repair our appliances, but never too busy to tell a funny story or spread his humor to all he came to know. I just had Merl fix out refrigerator,so had a nice visit with him more than once. What a talent he had. We loved talking to him when he would come to the house. He had such a great personality . What an awful shock! My sincere sympathies to the Lindsey family. Merl always shared a funny story or two every time he came to work on our appliances. He was honest and I never worried about leaving him to finish a job if I had to go somewhere before he was finished. He did great work and took pride in doing “an honest day’s work for an honest wage”. Our family will really miss him! Our community has suffered a significant loss. Each of the previous posts describe Merle perfectly. He was a talented man and a great asset to us homeowners in the area. My family and neighbors used his expertise many times over and always left a conversation with him smiling. I loved his stories and that special smile he always had when he talked about his love for his family. RIP Merle and give my dad a hug for me. I am so sorry to have read that Merle had passed away. Merle was so well thought of that you can rest assured he will be greatly missed by many. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
While related we were not close. If we met on the street we would not have recognized one another. My father was Elbert, one of the sons of Irving and Alice Lindsey (Willard, Julia, and Elbert were others in that generation.) I am the last one of that generation of the Lindsey clan because I was so much younger than the “boys”. Lavern Lindsey was my half brother, the others in that generation were Carl, Norman and Irving Myers, and Lavern. At one time the line of Lindsey families along Star Road (the name before it was renamed) covered several farms. .

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lindsey family. My wife Judy and I were so sad to hear of Merl’s passing.
We had only met Merl once, as he was recommended by a friend to make repairs to our dryer. We immediately thought, “What a great guy!” Not only did he show me how to repair my dryer should the same parts wear out again (Merl said, “And they will wear out again”), he also gave me the confidence to tackle my ice-maker plumbing issues on my own. I’ve never had much of a knack for plumbing. Thank you Merl! Our ice-maker has never made better ice cubes.

There is nothing more I can say about Mr. Lindsey that hasn’t been said. He was a great man that adored his family. That in itself says a lot. He always had a story about one of them. By now you all know how much of an impacted Merl had on this town & all the friends that he has helped through the years………He was the only repair man I enjoyed coming to the house. We had a standing joke……….I told him once ” did ya get my Memo” he said “for what?” I said it read he was not able to retire till I was gone.We had a good laugh about it, Also everytime he came I had to tell him my dishwasher was still working that he had fixed almost 15 yrs. ago with a paper clip, As he always would say ” that is some tricks of the trade” Thanks Merl for not only being the best repair man But the best of the best!!!! always made you clients glad to see you……………….

Our daughter, Gina, just called us last week to get Merl’s telephone number because she needed her dryer fixed. He fixed her dryer just this Monday before he passed on Tues. She was telling us what a great chat they had had. As all of these messages express, he will be missed sooooo much and our community was truly blessed to have had his expertise to count on for the many years we did. What a wonderful man. We have sweet memories of your family at Bronson Hospital while our little Taylor was so ill and your son was going thru a very hard time. We will never forget sharing hugs and prayers with you!!! Merl was simply the best. He was a rare combination of professional skill, experience, honesty, friendliness, advice, humor, and philosophy all rolled into one. He was quick to respond to his clients needs, and while curing an ailing appliance, he could also dispense common sense about a wide range of life topics. He was fun, fair, and reliable. I had the honor of assisting with the service today for Merl. Listening to all the wonderful stories from family and friends, especially from Merl’s Grandchildren brought tears to my eyes and am sure many others. I sure hope I can leave this love to my wife, kids and grandkids the way Merl did. What a special man to so many that left such a lasting impression that will never be replaced. He was also the repairman I called for appliance repair as probably most of the Otsego area. Rest in Peace to a perfect Gentleman!

I also shared many bus rides with the Lindsey “kids” over the years, but the more recent memories of a man of integrity running a much needed business in our community outshine those early years. Merl loved a puzzle, and our 30 year old washer gave him many moments of puzzle solving! His determination, intelligence and perseverance were always evident. I love that he continued to work with us, encouraging us to “hang on to the old appliances” as long as we could. What a unique perspective to have in 2015. He made friends with many, showing his kindness and care through his hard work in our homes. God’s comfort and love to your family.

Wow! I just heard the news yesterday! I am so sad I missed the funeral. Loving hugs to his family, May God hold you oh so close at this time. What an awsome man. Wise and funny. Spent many a ball game sitting near he and Sue. I will hold close my special memories.

We just heard about Merl’s passing on Saturday night, since we were in Montana on vacation. He was a kind, caring man. We only saw him when one of our appliances needed fixing, but he was so fun to talk to. You were blessed to have him. So sorry for your loss.

You and your family have my deepest sympathy at the passing of Merl. We had been in Florida and when I logged on to the computer, I was totally shocked when I saw his obituary. We have lost touch since HS, but he was one of the good guys in the class of ’68. Rest in Peace!!

So sorry for your loss. Merl will be missed by many in the Otsego and
Plainwell area. He was the epitome of the perfect repairman with a smile, but we know he was also the perfect husband, father and grandfather and friend. Cherish the memories.

I am so sorry to hear of Merl’s death.
It seems I just visited with him in my home, fixing my dryer, this time.
That’s how it was when Merl came by…a visit. Always willing to listen to my parenting, employment, and life challenges and, share his wisdom.
Politics and current events were often discussed as well.
Merl did more than fix my appliances; he shared his life.
I will miss him.

Our family had merl in “the family” for yrs. He was great at his job and just a joy to know period. Learned of his passing just today, and was thinking of him this past week. God bless his family, we’ve lost a great man but his wings could carry us all.

Sue I’m very sorry to hear about Merl. We were very good friends growing up and I spent a lot of time at the Lindsay Farm on Star Rd. where we would get into mischief sometimes with ( Carl) Merls dad.

To Sue and the Lindsey Family
I am so sorry to hear of Merl’s passing. He was genuine in every way. I spent a lot of time with Merl while taking care of his father Carl. Merl was always busy working but came everyday to see his father sometimes up to four or five times a day. While taking care of Carl, I spent a great memorial day with Merl and Sue’s family. The entire family filled a room with so much love. Merl taught me how to drive the combine with Carl’s help of course. This memory I will cherish forever. I will never forget Merl and his entire family. I was always treated as family. After Carl’s death Merl would still come to Kalamazoo and fix my mom’s appliances. My heart aches of sadness but I am grateful that I was lucky enough to have had the opportunity to be blessed with Merl’s (and the Lindsey family) kindness. May god watch over you and help lead you through these difficult times.
