SSG Mark H. Schoonhoven of Fort Carson, Colorado (formerly of Plainwell, Michigan) passed away Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, as the result of injuries suffered December 15, 2012 in Kabul, Afghanistan, after recently beginning his fifth tour of duty. He served for almost 7 years, joining the Army in 2006. He graduated from basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and served as a motor transport operator for the 32
nd
Transportation Company, 4
th
Infantry Division. He had also served in the 82
nd
Airborne Division.
SSG Schoonhoven was born June 13, 1974 in Plainwell to Harry and Deb (Markle) Schoonhoven. He attended Plainwell High School and enjoyed fishing and playing video games.
Surviving are his wife, Tammie (Loffer); six children, Nickolus Ramsey Schoonhoven of Otsego, Anjelika Schoonhoven and Ava Schoonhoven, both of Colorado, Sylvia Loffer and Forrest Loffer, both of Colorado and Sheeshta Perry of Crossville, TN; his parents; a brother, Christopher (Daniela) Schoonhoven of Plainwell; his grandmother, Jacobas Schoonhoven of Alabama; two nephews and one niece, Brandin, Gabriel and Elizabeth Schoonhoven; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends may visit with Mark’s family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the
Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego,
Funeral Services will be held at St. Margaret Catholic Church, 766 S. Farmer St., Otsego, at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, February 7, 2013, Mr. Don Verkow and Pastor Louis Arnett officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta.

Such a loss. My heart breaks for all of you. Mark had such a great presense when he came into a room. I loved how he spoke what was on his mind! Mark’s memories will live on and so will his spirit in each of his children. Be proud of raising such a great man that served our country and loved that he served our country. My heart goes out to all family and friends, Mark gave Ultimate sacifice by giving his life to protect our country, United States of America, his life was sacifice to keep loved one beside us. It sadddens our heart when we lose one of our warriors, and a dedicated father, and patriot. People like Sgt. I grew up in Plainwell and knew Mark. I learned of his death on the news station they have for us here in South Korea. I have many mixed emotions right now. I’ve lost alot of friends over the last 10 years, this is the first time one was someone I knew as a kid. I feel very saddened by the loss, and wonder if during my multiple rotations, if I had run into him and not realized it. It’s amazing how we change over the years.
If someday his children ever want to know what Mark was like as a kid, or what life is like in the Army please point them my way. I feel like I should help bridge a gap if I can. I could never replace him, but perhaps I could help somehow. I know my words probably don’t help, I don’t feel any better having said them.
I guess I wanted you to know that Mark may have been a soldier, but he’s remembered as a childhood friend.

Deb and Harry, It’s difficult to know what to say at a time like this. We are heart broken over what happened to Mark. We prayed every day for his recovery, but I guess God knew what was best. He is a true hero. We salute him and thank him for his dedication in defending our country. We pray for you and his wife and children.
We are in Florida and won’t be there for the service in person, but we will be in thought. We will be over to see you when we get home in April.

The Final Inspection
The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass.

The soldier squared his shoulders and said, “No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry guns, Can’t always be a saint.
I’ve had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I’ve been violent, Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny, That wasn’t mine to keep… Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep.

We remember Mark when he was in scouts with Ben.

I haven’t seen Mark since High School. He was an exceptionally nice and funny guy. It sounds like he had made a wonderful life for himself doing what he loved. It’s sad that his life has ended too soon. The sacrifice that Mark and so many other US men and women have made will not be forgotten. I pulled out our yearbook after hearing of Marks passing and looked through his photos and the rest of our PHS friends… I reminisced a while and said a prayer for Marks grieving family. Although I cannot be at Mark’s service, my thoughts and prayers are.
“May God be with you, in your hearts, surrounding you, giving you the strength you need to carry on in Mark’s honor. May you eventually find peace with your loss and hope for brighter days ahead as time and life will go on. May God bless your family and friends with all the memories you need to carry Mark in your heart for the rest of your lifetime. All of this in Jesus’ name” -Amen

I grew up in Plainwell and knew Mark. I learned of his death on the news station they have for us here in South Korea. I have many mixed emotions right now. I’ve lost alot of friends over the last 10 years, this is the first time one was someone I knew as a kid. I feel very saddened by the loss, and wonder if during my multiple rotations, if I had run into him and not realized it. It’s amazing how we change over the years.
If someday his children ever want to know what Mark was like as a kid, or what life is like in the Army please point them my way. I feel like I should help bridge a gap if I can. I could never replace him, but perhaps I could help somehow. I know my words probably don’t help, I don’t feel any better having said them.
I guess I wanted you to know that Mark may have been a soldier, but he’s remembered as a childhood friend.

Deb and Harry, It’s difficult to know what to say at a time like this. We are heart broken over what happened to Mark. We prayed every day for his recovery, but I guess God knew what was best. He is a true hero. We salute him and thank him for his dedication in defending our country. We pray for you and his wife and children.
We are in Florida and won’t be there for the service in person, but we will be in thought. We will be over to see you when we get home in April.

We will forever remember the great sacrifices Sgt. Schoonhoven made in service to his country for his family and the families of others here in the Michigan and abroad. In my eyes as well as others he has paid the ultimate sacrifice so we can walk and have the hands of FREEDOM guide us all of our days. I ask that God take the family and loved ones of our brother Sgt. Schoonhoven and wick away the sorrow but never wick away the memories of when they were with him enjoying him as a father, a brother, a friend and as a son.

The Final Inspection
The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass.
“Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you ? Have you always turned the other cheek ? To My Church have you been true?”
The soldier squared his shoulders and said, “No, Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry guns, Can’t always be a saint.
I’ve had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I’ve been violent, Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny, That wasn’t mine to keep… Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I’ve wept unmanly tears.

We were so sadden to hear of Marks passing..
We remember Mark when he was in scouts with Ben.
It seems like yesterday when the boys were little and they have grown into men..
I m so thankful for what Mark has done for our country.. He gave his all, his life.. He and his family have sacrificed so many things. How can thank you be enough to honor him .

I haven’t seen Mark since High School. He was an exceptionally nice and funny guy. It sounds like he had made a wonderful life for himself doing what he loved. It’s sad that his life has ended too soon. The sacrifice that Mark and so many other US men and women have made will not be forgotten. I pulled out our yearbook after hearing of Marks passing and looked through his photos and the rest of our PHS friends… I reminisced a while and said a prayer for Marks grieving family. Although I cannot be at Mark’s service, my thoughts and prayers are.
“May God be with you, in your hearts, surrounding you, giving you the strength you need to carry on in Mark’s honor. May you eventually find peace with your loss and hope for brighter days ahead as time and life will go on. May God bless your family and friends with all the memories you need to carry Mark in your heart for the rest of your lifetime. All of this in Jesus’ name” -Amen

I cannot say that I knew Sgt Mark H. Schoonhoven, I just want to send my prayers from a fellow service member.
My thought and prayers to your family – It is an honor to know that he served and protected helping instill the freedom for our families. He gave the ultimate sacrifice to our great nation. A hero!!
