Margaret C. Avery

Marge passed away Friday, June 12, 2015 at her home in Otsego.

She was born December 28, 1928, the only child of Leonard and Helen (Beale) Loomis. She grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and attended Western Reserve University for two years. She married in 1950 and was blessed with 3 children. After completing college and a degree in Library Science, she taught school and also was a school librarian.

In 1969 Marge moved to Michigan. There she met and married Kenneth Avery on June 12, 1971. With his two children they became a happily “blended” family and had a teen graduate from high school for four years in a row. Marge completed her working years as a teller at Kalamazoo Savings (now Charter One) and retired in 1992. In her spare time Marge enjoyed reading, gardening, knitting, and quilting. She made many quilts for family and friends. She loved horses and dogs. Rosie and Lola were her very special canine friends.

She is survived by her children; Carol (Bob) Howard of Battle Creek, Holly Guminski of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, Bruce (Susan) Ramsey of Silverdale, WA, Alan (Rhonda) Avery of Oscoda and Glen Ramsey of Alamo Township. She was blessed with 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ken, on November 15, 2005 and by her daughter-in-law, Kimberly Ramsey, wife of Glen Ramsey on April 3, 2015.

Friends may visit with Marge’s family Monday, June 15, 2015 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.

A Christian Funeral will be held Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at Peace Lutheran Church, Otsego, with Pastor Josh Olson officiating.

She will be laid to rest next to her husband Kenneth in Crystal Lake Cemetery, Frankfort, MI.

Marge was my grandmother, but I always called her Mom-Mom. Even though we lived far away, we would stay in touch through letters. We bonded over our shared love of animals and horses. She would often send me articles from the newspaper that she though would interest me. I am very sorry to not be able to make her funeral service, but I’m very comforted to hear that she will be laid to rest next to my dear Pop-Pop.

Marge was a member of the 2nd Monday Book Club at the Otsego Library. She had such a sharp and inquiring mind. She added a lot to the discussions. We will greatly miss her.

So sorry to hear of Marge’s passing. I have lived next door (caramel colored house) to Ken and Marge since 1985. They were ALWAYS very good neighbors as my kids grew up and moved out, then we had the dogs in common. Marge was always a very inquisitive and friendly neighbor and I will miss knowing she is right there beside me. Funny note to me anyway, I will never forget Marge calling me at work one day to tell me my basement light was on!. I could always count on her keeping an eye on things. 🙂 Blessing to your family.

p.s.My mother, Margaret Bullock lives next to me and I know if she could, she would send her condolences as well.

Marge and I were 1980 Charter Members of P.E.O., Chapter ED, a Philanthropic Educational Organization. She transferred from another chapter and was a P.E.O. for 62 years. She had the sweetest, most loving personality. It made you feel good just being around her. Marge will be missed by all who knew her.

I loved chatting with Marge every time she came into the library. She was very sweet and I loved seeing her and Lola every so often. She will be missed by the library staff and all who knew her.

I am several years late leaving my condolences, but my grandmother was very special to me, and I still think of her often. Like Synneva mentioned, I called her Mom-Mom, and I kept in touch with her from NJ (and while in college in KY) with letters and phone calls. I fondly remember many visits to Otsego, later visiting her more frequently after moving to Michigan. I remember the quilt she made for me when I was young and her showing me the first few squares she sewed together; she also sewed a quilt for my daughter, Natalie. I’m thankful that my children were also able to visit with her. They loved playing with Lola on our visits to Otsego, and they remember when she visited us at our home in Fowlerville, MI, and gave them Furskins teddy bears, each with its own story she told to them while sitting on our front porch.

Most importantly, Mom-Mom was very instrumental in my Christian faith from a young age. I remember her sending me a red mini binder to keep my memory verses in, and on the first page she wrote 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” This was one of the first Bible verses I memorized, and it always makes me think of her. Mom-Mom is greatly missed, but I know she is with her Savior in heaven, and I look forward to the day we are reunited.
