Larry took his final turn and headed for home on February 4, 2022.
He was born on April 14, 1949, the eldest son of Malcolm and Dorothy Smith (Chopp). He was a hard worker from a young age, working on the family farm and in the grape vineyards. Following graduation from Plainwell High School, he served his country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1969 to 1971. After returning home Larry married Glenda and they were blessed with two daughters, Sheila and Tracey.
Larry trained to be a certified farrier and blacksmith and was skilled at his craft. He was a trusted blacksmith working all over the state of Michigan. Larry raced ponies before graduating to Standardbred harness horse racing. He had many memorable horses and drives over the years. He set, and still holds, multiple track records around the state. He was part of a rare triple dead heat with Skyway JayLo in 2018. He travelled to many states to race and gained many friends; among those were Ed and Penny Brown who were close friends and stable mates for many years. Larry was inducted into the Michigan Harness Horseman Hall of Fame in 2011.
In 2005, he married Sue and gained two more daughters, Heather and Beth. Larry and Sue enjoyed 16 loving years together. They also enjoyed racing and riding horses, drives to watch the sunset and being with their grandkids. Larry was a very proud Papa. Since their papa had a big tractor and took them for rides his grandchildren referred to him lovingly as Papa Tractor. He doted on them and talked about them with his friends, played VERY loud music and making sure his grandkids knew he would catch a “Grenade” for them.
He enjoyed watching them play sports, took them hunting and fishing and even shared a birthday with one of them. Papa Tractor taught them the true meaning of hard work, what “man hands” looked like, and to be kind to others. He would always tell them “Can’t never did anything”. If you couldn’t find him working with horses or attending an event for his grandkids, you could find him on the golf course.
He was also an avid hunter who enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors with his grandchildren. Larry enjoyed a big bowl of popcorn or ice cream for an evening treat. After fair races, he would share his love of chocolate covered cherry flurries and fries with vinegar and “just a little” salt with whoever came along.
Larry leaves behind his loving wife, Sue; children Sheila and Rob Sarro, Tracey and Jeff Bryant, Heather and Lamar Cain and Beth and Matthew McRae; grandchildren, Robert, Sam and Savana Sarro, Liam Bryant, Lilyana and Lauryn Cain, Siaara and Asher McRae; siblings, Terrie Lynn, Robin(Jim), Bob (Malissia), Victor (Jodi), Mary (Randy), Larry Joe (Suzanne), Sheryl & Barb (Dan) as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Gary.
When remembering Larry many will think of the V of his race colors, white, and gold and green (especially those behind him in the races.) We will miss his charismatic personality, his laugh, his smile, but most of all when he hugged you, he hugged you!
According to his wishes cremation has taken place.
Friends may visit with Larry’s family from 5-8 PM, Wednesday, February 16, 2022, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego.
Dress will be casual.
Contributions in memory of Larry may be made to the MHHA Scholarship Fund.

Sue and family, you have our sincere sympathy. We had many many fun times with Larry throughout the years, going to races with him, driving our race horses, being a partner with him, shoeing our horses and his visits to our farm. He loved dogs and enjoyed watching our Border Collies perform jumping in the air retrieving a disc and playing tetherball. He always had a big smile on his face and when he would get ready to leave to go back home he would give a big bear hug. We have known Larry for over 40 years. He will be greatly missed.

Dad and I are so sorry for your loss sue. As we all know Larry was a incredible horseman but anyone who had the privilege of knowing him quickly found out that he is a even MORE Incredible human being!!!! He always enjoyed listening to our stories of doctor pol and had a way of making everyone feel special. I noticed that even with all of Larry’s successes in the harness world he was never cocky or arrogant and was willing to give you a catch drive or just lend a helping hand if needed those are very rare traits to have in this sport and it says a lot about Larry as a person. We will always remember Larry the legend as we called him may he Rest In Peace.

We look forward to the day when there will be no more good byes and we can all spend eternity together, playing pranks just like old times. All our love, Rocky and Brenda Reinholtz

Sue: my wife, Elaine and I, Charles Hansen, met you and Larry at Shelbyville, Indiana Fairgrounds in 2016. Larry drove
Skyway My Way to a win. We have a picture of that win.
Actually, our memories of Larry go way back to 1977. Larry shod our first trotter VP Speedcrest . He then drove VP
to his first win at Cassopolis Fair in 1978. in 1979 Larry drove VP to his life time record of 2:10. at Centerville. We have four more win pictures of Larry driving VP. These win pictures bring back wonderful memories.
Losing a loved one is a hard reality to accept, but harness racing memories last a life time.
We treasure our harness memories of Larry.
Our sympathy goes out to you and the whole Smith family.

There are no words…Smitty (as my Dad called him) was one of the Best! I honestly can’t remember a time in all the years of seeing him at fairs where he didn’t greet me with a smile and a big old hug! Unfortunately, after my Dad sold all of our harness horses and was taken from us unexpectedly in 2015, I didn’t get to see much of harness racing, fairs or any of Dad’s racing buddies. However, I continued to “keep tabs” on most of them and loved that guys like Smitty continued to keep harness racing alive! Harness racing just won’t be the same without one of the G.O.A.Ts in the sulky! But, I hope you and your family will always remember the amazing times you had with him! I am sending lots of hugs and prayers to y’all during this very difficult time!!

Having a horse myself, I couldn’t imagine the thrill of what he did and his passion for doing it. I know he loved you girls so very much. I so much enjoyed when your mom would bring you to my apartment when I was a very young adult and you would go swimming with me. I always said you were my girls because I enjoyed you so much. What a shock – passing so unexpectedly. Remember well seeing him around, visiting about shoeing horses, racing, even this past summer, at Hastings, seeing him with Eddie Brown, and at Northville, Hoosier Park, Hawthorne, and even Balmoral Park.
Was recovering from an illness myself around that time and couldn’t attend the ceremonies.
