Joyce L. Smith

Joyce entered the presence of her Lord and Savior Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at her home in Otsego.

She was born October 2, 1955 in Allegan the daughter of Neil and Shirley (Townsend) Marshall. Joyce had worked as the store manager at Sheffer’s Cheese and had operated a daycare from her home for 14 years. Joyce also worked for Allegan Community Federal Credit Union for about 20 years.

In her spare time she enjoyed gardening, reading, tatting doilies and other lace creations, baking and cooking.  But most of all, Joyce loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She was slow to complain and always willing to help and serve others. Proverbs 31: 10-31 best exemplifies Joyce’s life. She was extensively involved with the children’s ministries at both Allegan Bible Church and Merson Church.

On June 26, 1976 at Allegan Baptist Church she married Richard Smith Jr. who survives. Also surviving are her children, Daniel (Angela) Smith, Michael (Sarah) Smith and Richard III (Colleen) Smith; Sarah Ballast, who was like a daughter to Joyce; 7 grandchildren, Daniel, Noah, Andrew, Marshall, Caleb, Lucas and Olivia; siblings, Christine (Richard) Ballast, Lois (Harry) Nielsen and Amy (Mike) Staton; sister-in-law, Pamela (John) LaHuis along with 7 nieces and 4 nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

According to her wishes cremation has taken place.

My thoughts and prayers are with Joyce’s family. She was such a wonderful gal, very caring about everyone she dealt with. I am sure that she is with our LORD. May her family feel the Lord’s presence in this time of sorrow and receive comfort from his Mercy and Grace.

We have known Joyce many years through Allegan Community Federal Credit Union. We became friends as she dealt with us as clients as though we were important and our lives and situations mattered. We always felt we could call on her to help with any of our concerns related to our accounts. She will be missed for sure on our trips to the credit union. Blessings to all her family, co-workers, and friends.

I first met Joyce walking in our neighborhood when I was walking my dog a few years ago. She was always so nice and friendly to us. Than she was sharing her walk with her new dog Daisy. I was always happy to see both of them and can’t imagine my morning walks without watching for them. I will still smile when I vision Joyce riding her bike while walking Daisy. I may not have even known her last name but she made my life better just knowing her a little. I will miss her and am very sorry and sad for those of you who knew her well. With fond memories, Wenda
