John F. Van Atta, III of Otsego, Michigan, passed away Monday, January 31, 2011, in Allegan. John was born November 13, 1942 in Kalamazoo to John and Patricia (Wilson) Van Atta II. For many years he was employed as a purchasing agent with Kal-Equip and later with Allen Test Products. He was a member of the Otsego Elks Lodge #1711 B.P.O.E. and was very active in the Men’s Auxiliary of the V.F.W., having served as treasurer and newsletter editor. John drove stock cars at the Kalamazoo Speedway, enjoyed watching NASCAR and all sports, and playing Texas Hold ‘Em. He never had a mean thing to say about anyone. Surviving are his wife, the former Carol Collier of Otsego; three step-children, Deanna Marshall of south Carolina, Mike (Karen) Collier and Danene (Scott) Metz, both of Otsego; seven step-grandchildren; a brother, Brad Van Atta of Richland; and a special sister-in-law, Lois Hatten, of Otsego. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Contributions in memory of John may be made to Wings Home.
