John F. Avery of Kalamazoo, MI passed away suddenly on Wednesday, May 14, 2015 at his home in Kalamazoo. John was born August 18, 1948 in Kalamazoo to Willard and Goldie (Griffith) Avery and was raised by his grandparents Pauline and Forrest Griffith. John served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam and was honorably discharged as a decorated Corpral. John had worked as a bouncer for many years at Bresa del Rio, a local country line dance club and had also worked on the bull gang at Georgia Pacific. John enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and bird watching. In his spare time he was an avid gun collector and loved watching movies and spending time with his best friend and caregiver, Monica Henry and her family.
He is survived by his sisters Paula (Thomas) Brindley of Kalamazoo and Marchelle Poe of Alabama; several nieces and nephews and his friend, Monica (Mark) Henry and their children, Victoria and Makayla. He was preceded in death by his parents; step father, Richard VanAvery; aunts, uncles and siblings, Charles Robert LeRoy Sanders, Carl, Walt, Rosemary, Blanche and Charles.
Burial with military honors will take place on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI at 1pm.

aweee big john!! Your going to be missed!! <3 I know your soaring with the birds and angels now. I knew John from when i worked at dollar general, he was so fun and caring and such a compassionate person, and a protective warrior even after his service days, we will miss you!!

My dearest Buddy Big John, I sure miss spending time at your house and your funny antics! I am saddened to think I will never see you again! Thanks for all the friendship and great stories over the last 23 years you will be remembered always and talked about often and My girls always thought of you as their adopted grandpa. Thank you for your service in Vietnam and for our freedom we love you always! R.I.P.
