JoAnn Barton VanderBorgh, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on February 12, 2025, at the age of 88. Born October 14, 1936, in Otsego to Charles and Josephine (Deurloo) Barton, JoAnn's life was a testament to love, creativity, and generosity.
She was known for her vibrant spirit and her house motto, “there is always room for one more.” JoAnn found peace in her daily devotionals and prayer. She enjoyed weaving, knitting, braiding rugs, playing goofus, Chinese checkers, Scrabble but in her own words, NEVER COOKING.
After raising her family in Saginaw Township and then moving back to Pine Lake, she fostered strong bonds with her neighbors who regularly watched over her, forging beautiful friendships. Tuesdays were always a highlight for her when she devoted her time volunteering at Christian Neighbors food pantry, embodying her passion for service, camaraderie, and kindness.
Throughout her life, JoAnn remained extremely proud of her children and grandchildren, always ensuring that each of them knew they were special and treasured.
She leaves behind her loving children: Ann (Wouter) Korijn of the Netherlands, Matt (Mehyun) VanderBorgh of the Netherlands, Mark (Melanie Eberhart) VanderBorgh of North Carolina, Jane Ellen (Kevin) Beck of Kentucky, and Clarence Nicholas VanderBorgh II of New York. JoAnn also leaves twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren to cherish her memory as well as many nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.
JoAnn was an avid Red Wings fan, a graduate of Hope College, and a member of Otsego Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Nicholas VanderBorgh, and her siblings, Catherine Peacock and Charles "Brother" Barton.
According to her wishes cremation has taken place.
Contributions in memory of JoAnn may be directed to Christian Neighbors in Plainwell. In lieu of a service at this time, being friendly to a neighbor would honor JoAnn’s memory and keep her spirit alive.
