Jean passed away, Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. She was born on November 19, 1934, in England, the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Mann) Breed. In her younger years Jean worked at Parker Hannifin in the cafeteria for several years. She went on to work as a secretary at Otsego High School until her retirement in the mid 90’s. Jean was known for her green thumb and loved working in her flower gardens. She also liked biking and could be found on the Kal Haven Trail several times a week. Jean had a giving heart and enjoyed supporting many charities.

Surviving are her daughters, Deborah Newhouse of Ohio, Rebecca Nelson of Colorado and Maureen (Randy) Edwards of Arizona; grandchildren, Daniel Newhouse, David Newhouse, Anna Wolf, Joseph Newhouse and John Newhouse along with several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Jean is also survived by her long-time companion Andrew "Andy" Bird. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Russell “Dean” Smalla, who she married in 1953 and by her siblings, Joe, Ken, Ted and Joan. 

According to her wishes cremation has taken place. 

A celebration of Jean’s life will take place in the spring.
