Herb passed away, Thursday, August 29, 2024, at Stanford Lodge in Plainwell. 

He was born February 27, 1929, in Kalamazoo, the son of Freeman and Dessell (Roberts) Smalley. Herb graduated from Plainwell High School in 1947. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. For many years he worked at National Water Lift which became Parker Aerospace until his retirement in 1989. 

Mechanically inclined, Herb could fix anything and enjoyed restoring and collecting antique tractors. He built his family’s first color TV from a kit and liked working on electronics. Herb loved spending time riding buggies at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. He was a member of the Sports Buggy Association and the Michigan Flywheelers. 

Herb was a kindhearted man who was ready to help anyone in need. He loved his family and was a wonderful provider. In 1952 in Kalamazoo, he married Mary Pickett who passed away in 2007. 

Surviving are his children, Terry Steinman of Plainwell; Gary (Becky) Smalley of Tennessee and Richard (Patti) Smalley of Middleville; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Diana and grandson, Isiah. 

According to his wishes cremation has taken place. 

Burial of ashes will take place at West Cooper Cemetery.
