The passing of Aunt Helen brings so many memories, some deep, others joyous, and all filled with regrets for opportunities lost. Memories of my two visits to California, Sonoma, Napa Valley still recall feelings of love and specialness. But thrilling and life changing cross-country trips aside, on hearing of Aunt Helen’s passing I am most impacted by so many more memories that were not to be. For reasons beyond my control, as a young boy, our paths diverged abruptly. And over the ensuing years I so lamented the lost chance for another visit, another family get-together, another anticipated visit from our far away family. I remember like yesterday waiting, peering out the window from my West Squantum Street home for the lights of Uncle Vinny’s Buick Regal to pull up the steep driveway for another precious visit. And maybe, just maybe, Aunt Joyce would come to. Joyce was my absolute favorite. Always so excited to see me, I looked forward to no one as much. I hope this note reaches the eyes of those who would care to know – that I miss you, I miss you all, today and always. Love, Mike
