Guy Hess Jr.
Guy E. Hess Jr. of Gobles, MI passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at his home. He was born March 6, 1937 in Kalamazoo, the son of Guy and Maxine (Crawford) Hess. Guy graduated from State High School where he pitched on the Varsity Baseball team for 3 years, with a record of 21 wins and 4 losses. During the summer in high school, he played American Legion Baseball under Coach Fred Stevens. Their team was the state runner-up. Guy was honored 4 years in the Kalamazoo Gazette All City Pitchers roster and was awarded 3 Gold Baseballs for pitchers in Kalamazoo area schools. After high school he attended Grand Rapids Community College where he was starting pitcher for two years, then pitched for one year at Western Michigan University where he graduated with a Master’s Degree. Guy also played one year with the Washington Senators, a Minnesota Twins organization. In 1962 he was student teacher under George Klaeran at Otsego Public Schools in 7
th
grade health and physical education and assisted in varsity baseball. He then taught in Colon, MI schools for 2 years. From 1965 to 1988, he taught PE, Life Science and Math, also coaching 7
th
& 8
th
grade boys baseball, 7
th
& 8
th
grade intramural sports and introduced floor hockey. Guy served Otsego High School athletics in varsity baseball, girls softball, JV baseball, was a faculty manager and ran the clock for over 40 years during football and basketball games for Freshman, JV and Varsity boys and girls. He spent 45 years teaching Driver’s Ed to over 5000 students and never had an accident. His total hours were over 9000 including classroom, driving range and road time. Guy never missed a day teaching due to illness.
On July 11, 1987 in Otsego he married Nancy Neal who survives. Also surviving are his children, Cory (Aimee) Hess, Sydne (Akinori) Suzuki, Scott (Sherry) Hess and Christa (Jim) Wesley; 9 grandchildren, Ashley, Kaitlyn, Bailey, Tyler, Sara, Shayna, Sawyer, Sage and Jasmine; 3 great-grandchildren, Brayden, Maysn and McKenzie; his siblings, Gayle Hess and Jim Hess; extended family members and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Glen Hess.
Friends may meet with Guy’s family Sunday, February 15, 2015 from 3 P.M. until the time of the Memorial Service at 6 P.M. at the

I don’t even know where to begin to express my sorrow. Guy was more than a colleague and friend; he was Otsego and North Lake family. He was so full of bark and no bite (which kids saw through immediately and loved) with a ready smile and a tongue-in-cheek comment, and a compassionate heart. I will miss him. We all will. This world won’t be the same without him.

A truly great man. I always left a conversation with Coach feeling encouraged, even as an adult. He could always make me laugh. I’m inspired to know the number of lives has has touched. You will forever be remembered in our family as the most kind hearted neighbor/teacher of all times. You always treated everyone you touched the way you wanted to be treated. Words cannot explain how much Mr. Hess meant to me and my family. I had the pleasure of knowing him as a teacher but also as my dad’s best friend. He is one of those most loving men I have ever met. He was jokester, but always a teacher at heart. Every time I saw him, the conversation started with a joke about my hair being a mess (which I loved) and then followed by a hug and him telling me something important and inspirational! I don’t remember a time that he didn’t do this. Even last year we were both picking up kids from the high school and he jumped in my car just to check on me and talk about what was going on in my life, and shared lots of great advice. I understand why he is my dad’s best friend; they have the same heart. His love did not stop for his best friends daughters; he loved his grand kids as well. I am so blessed that I have had this man in my life and my daughter’s lives. I can speak for all the entire Goswick family, and say we love and will miss this man so much!

Guy Hess was an excellent teacher. I had him in 7th or 8th grade for one of his classes. Mr. Hess cared about his students’ educational accomplishments and did everything to help the class learn about the subjects he taught. I always felt Mr. Hess truly cared about each student and wanted to help us reach our goals in life. Mr. Hess was also a neighbor for a number of years and you could see how much he loved his family with all of his heart and what a blessing his children were to him.

Some people remember their school days with fondness when they of that “one special teacher” and that was always Mr.Hess for me. I was lucky enough to have him in 7th and 8th grades and then again for driver’s training . He was a great man which made it easier for him to be a good educator. He was always respected and loved by his students and I’m sure adored by his family and friends. To his family, so sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing him with us…….

Mister Hess was an amazing teacher and person, sometimes teaching when you thought he was just joking around. I have several memories of him thru out the years he was my teacher. My prayers go out the his family in their loss.

Whenever I (Penny) think of Guy, I cannot help but smile. He made me laugh…..just by being who he was. That grin usually meant he had something up his sleeve.
He was such a fun man, a wonderful father/grandfather, and both of us were honored to have worked with him while we were at Otsego High School.

There are a handful of teachers who have had a profound impact on my life, and Mr. Hess was one of them. I hold dearly a fond memory of his hearty laugh that I recall as if it happened only an hour ago; I can picture where my desk was located, the lesson, the class discussion, and the question I asked aloud. (It was a typical airhead-TLittle question!)
To those whom have ridden in my car going anywhere, to my beloved five-oh, (especially ‘Officer Vocabulary’ who taught me the word “deplorable” when referencing my speeding habits), and to those employees who have been forced to send me warning letters about too many points, please don’t blame Mr. Hess….he diagnosed my “lead-foot” condition at age 15, and tried his hardest to cure it. The first time he mentioned it was after we had exited 131 and were headed west on M-89 into Otsego. “Um, Trace,” he said. “You’re really going to need to remember that your speed should Significantly Decrease once you are no longer on an expressway. I can see this might be a problem for you.” For the record, I am finally back to zero points for speeding on my record, so, as stubborn as I was/am Mr. Hess, I was Always listening, I Tremendously enjoyed your class, I Painfully experience the news of your passing, and I will ALWAYS remember you and smile. Thank you for being you, and I am so honored to have once been your student. May you rest in peace knowing You Made A Difference.

I had the pleasure of being one of his many students and then later in life Tim and I enjoyed being in a small group at church with Guy and Nancy. Guy will always have a special place in my heart with so many warm memories. When I was undergoing chemo this past summer, it was always a bright spot to share time together catching up while we were at the cancer center.

Guy loved his cars, and especially his 1957 Chevy. I use to talk with him at car shows for many years. We always had a good discussion on the better car, Ford or Chevy? I always respected his opinion on cars, and I always respected his teaching profession. He seemed to be a loyal and dedicated man. He always thanked me for my military service when he saw me in a parade in uniform. I will also miss seeing him around Otsego. We always seemed to have something to talk about. I know he was also a good friend of my dad’s and spent time helping to support Boy Scout Troop 98 in Otsego. He will be greatly missed. Peace and comfort to all of the lives he touched. I only knew Guy a few years, teaching DE with him. My sympathies to you, Nancy. I still remember Guy telling a student driver who was practicing backing, “Hey, look out, your wheels are going backwards!” A great sense of humor and a great friend. Had a very nice vintage car I had the privilege to ride in with him.

Cory, Sydne, Scott, I am saddened for you and the loss of your father. Uncle Guy was my only uncle, with time and age we grew apart as a family group, I often think back fondly of the childhood memories we share. I laugh as I think how many times I got my ear snapped by Uncle Guy. I am sorry to say I will not be able to make it to Michigan for the memorial service but know you are in my thoughts. Mr. Hess was a mentor to many students. I had the pleasure of working with him, when I worked for the Otsego Community Education Department, he taught Driver’s Education to many. My husband had him for a teacher. He was a wonderful man and friend. I would see him at the car shows and he always had a joke and a smile. Nancy and family, my heart breaks for you. May God give you strength. Guy RIP my friend, as you walk the streets of gold.

My heart is heavy with sadness.
I returned to Otsego this past summer for the purpose of a Community Gathering to honor, remember, and promote awareness of my sister, Kathy Wilcox, who has been missing since July 21, 1972.
While in the area, my car broke down outside Gobles. Mr. Hess was the first person on the scene and offered me shelter from the elements in his vehicle.
We shared fond stories of school days etc.
It was a great honor to have the gift of that time to visit with him.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

He was a great man. Very influential in my life. He taught me to drive, drafting, autos, and metal shop. A great teacher, and mentor. Never heard anything bad ever come out of his mouth. He will be missed.

To The Hess Family, I had the pleasure of meeting Guy at the Kendall store about a year ago,where his friend Wes would come in and have coffee, were we would all set around and talk about everything that we thought was important. It was fun and we all had plenty of laughs together. I was happy to have met Guy and I will miss him and his talks. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

He was a great teacher and a great man he cared for every kid he came in contact with when he was working at school. I have never known anyone to take the time out to care for each and every person he came in contact with. He was loved at OHS. He made driver’s training great fun. He will be sadly missed. My heart goes out to his family and friends, especially to Scott since we graduated together in 1985. Your dad was proud. Heaven gained another great soul.

Very sorry to learn of this passing. Our prayers are with you.
I can still recall Mr. Hess kicking a cone in front of that 3-speed on the column truck I was driving in the student parking lot. Just to make sure I would hit the brakes. Wonder how many kids can say that?
He made the classes he was teaching, a joy to be in. He was fair and fun to be near. Always smiled and shared great humor. He was a friend to many. You could easily see that, as student’s flocked around him. Kids wanted to be in his classes.
Even though we havn’t spoken since the late 70’s. I still consider him a friend, I am very grateful to have had the chance to know this fine man.
If OHS had a Hall of Fame for people who touched kid’s lives.
Mr. Hess is in on the first vote.

Please accept my most sincere condolences over the loss of Guy. I hope you can enjoy and share all the great memories of him while you mourn his passing.
He was a huge positive part of the Otsego community for a long time. He was my teacher in middle school and driver’s ed, and he was always tough but fair.
Having grown up around the corner, I know he was also a great father to his family in addition to touching literally hundreds, if not thousands of people, in a positive way.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during your time of mourning the loss of a great man.

Guy was one of the first people I worked with when I started my teaching and coaching position at Otsego Public Schools in 1968. I taught next to Guy in the middle school, and was his JV baseball coach while he coached the Varsity. He was a mentor and dear friend, that had a impact on my teaching and coaching career. We also worked side by side for over thirty years doing Varsity and JV football games for the mighty Bulldogs! With Guy on the scoreboard and clock and myself announcing we had so many fun experiences together. In recent years Barb and I have spent time with Guy and Nancy in our small group meetings for church. We will treasure our memories of Guy and Nancy always.

I had the pleasure of having Mr. Hess in school and then my children did as well. He liked to sound tough, but we all knew he was a push over. Mr. Hess cared about his students’ educational accomplishments and did everything to help the class learn about the subjects he taught. I always felt Mr. Hess truly cared about each student and wanted to help us reach our goals in life. Mr. Hess was also a neighbor for a number of years and you could see how much he loved his family with all of his heart and what a blessing his children were to him.

Some people remember their school days with fondness when they of that “one special teacher” and that was always Mr.Hess for me. I was lucky enough to have him in 7th and 8th grades and then again for driver’s training . He was a great man which made it easier for him to be a good educator. He was always respected and loved by his students and I’m sure adored by his family and friends. To his family, so sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing him with us…….

Mister Hess was an amazing teacher and person, sometimes teaching when you thought he was just joking around. I have several memories of him thru out the years he was my teacher. My prayers go out the his family in their loss.

Whenever I (Penny) think of Guy, I cannot help but smile. He made me laugh…..just by being who he was. That grin usually meant he had something up his sleeve.
He was such a fun man, a wonderful father/grandfather, and both of us were honored to have worked with him while we were at Otsego High School.
Our deepest sympathies Nancy, Scott and to the rest of your family.

There are a handful of teachers who have had a profound impact on my life, and Mr. Hess was one of them. I hold dearly a fond memory of his hearty laugh that I recall as if it happened only an hour ago; I can picture where my desk was located, the lesson, the class discussion, and the question I asked aloud. (It was a typical airhead-TLittle question!)
To those whom have ridden in my car going anywhere, to my beloved five-oh, (especially ‘Officer Vocabulary’ who taught me the word “deplorable” when referencing my speeding habits), and to those employees who have been forced to send me warning letters about too many points, please don’t blame Mr. Hess….he diagnosed my “lead-foot” condition at age 15, and tried his hardest to cure it. The first time he mentioned it was after we had exited 131 and were headed west on M-89 into Otsego. “Um, Trace,” he said. “You’re really going to need to remember that your speed should Significantly Decrease once you are no longer on an expressway. I can see this might be a problem for you.” For the record, I am finally back to zero points for speeding on my record, so, as stubborn as I was/am Mr. Hess, I was Always listening, I Tremendously enjoyed your class, I Painfully experience the news of your passing, and I will ALWAYS remember you and smile. Thank you for being you, and I am so honored to have once been your student. May you rest in peace knowing You Made A Difference.

I had the pleasure of being one of his many students and then later in life Tim and I enjoyed being in a small group at church with Guy and Nancy. Guy will always have a special place in my heart with so many warm memories. When I was undergoing chemo this past summer, it was always a bright spot to share time together catching up while we were at the cancer center.

Guy loved his cars, and especially his 1957 Chevy. I use to talk with him at car shows for many years. We always had a good discussion on the better car, Ford or Chevy? I always respected his opinion on cars, and I always respected his teaching profession. He seemed to be a loyal and dedicated man. He always thanked me for my military service when he saw me in a parade in uniform. I will also miss seeing him around Otsego. We always seemed to have something to talk about. God Bless you GUY, and may God hold you near. Some day we will drag race that quarter mile to see what the better car really is. Dave Delemme

To Cory, Sydney and the rest of the Hess family…I send you my sincere condolences. Guy was a talented athlete, teacher and father. I know he was also a good friend of my dad’s and spent time helping to support Boy Scout Troop 98 in Otsego. He will be greatly missed. Peace and comfort to all of the lives he touched. I only knew Guy a few years, teaching DE with him. My sympathies to you, Nancy. I still remember Guy telling a student driver who was practicing backing, “Hey, look out, your wheels are going backwards!” A great sense of humor and a great friend. Had a very nice vintage car I had the privilege to ride in with him.

Cory, Sydne, Scott, I am saddened for you and the loss of your father. Uncle Guy was my only uncle, with time and age we grew apart as a family group, I often think back fondly of the childhood memories we share. I laugh as I think how many times I got my ear snapped by Uncle Guy. I am sorry to say I will not be able to make it to Michigan for the memorial service but know you are in my thoughts. Mr. Hess was a mentor to many students. I had the pleasure of working with him, when I worked for the Otsego Community Education Department, he taught Driver’s Education to many. My husband had him for a teacher. He was a wonderful man and friend. I would see him at the car shows and he always had a joke and a smile. Nancy and family, my heart breaks for you. May God give you strength. Guy RIP my friend, as you walk the streets of gold.

My heart is heavy with sadness.
I returned to Otsego this past summer for the purpose of a Community Gathering to honor, remember, and promote awareness of my sister, Kathy Wilcox, who has been missing since July 21, 1972.
While in the area, my car broke down outside Gobles. Mr. Hess was the first person on the scene and offered me shelter from the elements in his vehicle.
We shared fond stories of school days etc.
It was a great honor to have the gift of that time to visit with him.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

He was a great man. Very influential in my life. He taught me to drive, drafting, autos, and metal shop. A great teacher, and mentor. Never heard anything bad ever come out of his mouth. He will be missed.

To The Hess Family, I had the pleasure of meeting Guy at the Kendall store about a year ago,where his friend Wes would come in and have coffee, were we would all set around and talk about everything that we thought was important. It was fun and we all had plenty of laughs together. I was happy to have met Guy and I will miss him and his talks. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

To friends and family of Mr. Hess:
He was a great teacher and a great man he cared for every kid he came in contact with when he was working at school. I have never known anyone to take the time out to care for each and every person he came in contact with. He was loved at OHS. He made driver’s training great fun. He will be sadly missed. My heart goes out to his family and friends, especially to Scott since we graduated together in 1985. Your dad was proud. Heaven gained another great soul.

Very sorry to learn of this passing. Our prayers are with you.
I can still recall Mr. Hess kicking a cone in front of that 3-speed on the column truck I was driving in the student parking lot. Just to make sure I would hit the brakes. Wonder how many kids can say that?
He made the classes he was teaching, a joy to be in. He was fair and fun to be near. Always smiled and shared great humor. He was a friend to many. You could easily see that, as student’s flocked around him. Kids wanted to be in his classes.
Even though we havn’t spoken since the late 70’s. I still consider him a friend, I am very grateful to have had the chance to know this fine man.
If OHS had a Hall of Fame for people who touched kid’s lives.
Mr. Hess is in on the first vote.
Thanks for the great memories and laughs.

He was a huge positive part of the Otsego community for a long time. He was my teacher in middle school and driver’s ed, and he was always tough but fair.
Having grown up around the corner, I know he was also a great father to his family in addition to touching literally hundreds, if not thousands of people, in a positive way.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during your time of mourning the loss of a great man.

Guy was one of the first people I worked with when I started my teaching and coaching position at Otsego Public Schools in 1968. I taught next to Guy in the middle school, and was his JV baseball coach while he coached the Varsity. He was a mentor and dear friend, that had a impact on my teaching and coaching career. We also worked side by side for over thirty years doing Varsity and JV football games for the mighty Bulldogs! With Guy on the scoreboard and clock and myself announcing we had so many fun experiences together. In recent years Barb and I have spent time with Guy and Nancy in our small group meetings for church. We will treasure our memories of Guy and Nancy always.

I had the pleasure of having Mr. Hess in school and then my children did as well. He liked to sound tough, but we all knew he was a push over.
