Gladys Wyatt
Gladys Wyatt of Plainwell (formerly of Otsego) went to be with her Lord on Monday, February 6, 2012. Gladys was born December 14, 1919 in Sturgis, the daughter of Lyndon and Clara (Baldy) Wyatt. She attended 5
th
through 12
th
grades at Otsego Public Schools, graduating in 1937. Gladys obtained her Bachelor and Master degrees from Western Michigan University. In 1983 she retired from Martin Public Schools after a 42 year teaching career. The Wyatt Center at Martin Public Schools was named in her honor. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Otsego, the True Blue Class, Gideons International and the Allegan County Retired School Personnel. Gladys had been on a mission trip to India, where she visited orphanages. Her hobbies included flower gardening, crocheting and crafts.
Surviving are a sister Margaret Hamminga of Kalamazoo; a brother Duard Wyatt of Indianapolis, IN; a sister-in-law, Joyce Wyatt Brunsink of Jennison; 2 brothers-in-law Omar Royer of Frankfort and Carl Gordon of Kalamazoo; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 1 brother, Ruth Gilson, Beverly Gordon, Mary Louis Royer and Donald Wyatt.
Friends may meet with her family from 6-8 pm Thursday at the
Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego
. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday at the First Baptist Church of Otsego, Pastor Merlyn Jones officiating. Interment will be at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.

To the family of Gladys, I’m sorry for your loss. I knew Gladys for many years. I always found her to be a kind, gentle, humble soul who loved the Lord with all her heart. She loved to tell stories of the “old days”, enjoyed our crafts, and loved the singing time while living at Stanford Lodge. She had a subtle sense of humor that would show itself when least expected. She was a true Christian lady and she will be missed by those who knew her.

Miss Wyatt was my kindergarten teacher at Martin in 1965. I will always remember her laugh. Martin Schools is deeply indebted to her for her many, many years of dedication and service.

Miss Wyatt was my kindergarten teacher in 1957 and I will never forget the Valentine card she gave me during my 10 wonderful months under her care. She was kind, made us think for ourselves, insisted on perfect penmanship and being a good citizen. She will never be forgotten nor will her teachings.

Gladys lived near my parents for all of my childhood. She was such a kind woman, and I can remember going to her home frequently as a child for Bible lessons. She always had amazing cookies for us =) My condolences go out to her family and close friends. May they find comfort in knowing that she is at peace and home with her Lord.

Miss Wyatt was my kindergarten teacher; I was in the last class she taught at Martin. She was a wonderful woman and I still have some great memories of her. I’ll always remember her alphabet characters and the “line leader” board. To her family: may the many memories you have of her and the stories her students share, comfort you in this time. Thank you for sharing her with all of us!

I was also one of the fortunate ones who had Miss Wyatt for my kindergarten teacher (1965). My initial educational experience was a positive one becasue of Gladys Wyatt! I can still remember her gentle nature and warm smile and the way she made us all feel special. Her contributions to the school district and the Martin community are immeasurable. She will definitely be missed…and remembered always.

Miss Wyatt was my kindergarten teacher in 1950. Though that was many years ago I still remember her well. She had a very positive impact on not just me, but nearly every student that went through her classes for 42 years.

I also was in Miss Wyatt’s kindergarten class the last year she taught. I came to Martin after the school year had started. I still remember that first day. Miss Wyatt was so warm and friendly, she made it easy to adjust to a new class. One of my fondest memories is a field trip to her house. I will never forget her and my favorite lesson, a triangle is always a triangle even when it is upside down!

Surely a treasure to the community and Martin Public Schools.Few teachers can lay claim to teaching 4 generations of students in the same family. Truly a remarkable Christian person as well.

Miss Wyatt was my kindergarten teacher in 1967. Some teachers leave a lasting impression on your life and Miss Wyatt was one of those teachers. She had a warmth and tenderness toward her kids that I will carry with me all the days of my life. What a great legacy she has left through all the young lives she helped mold. Say hello for me to my grandma Julia Mae Tandy and great aunt Agnes Patterson who you taught with for many years at Martin. Godspeed to you and your entire family.

Miss Wyatt was my Kindergarten teacher as well. We will all remember great things about our year with her. I will remember the Letter People, the slide and the dentist person we got to “work” on. I also remember our “carpet time” with her reading to us. I will always remember where she lived because we went on a field trip to the Plainwell airport and then to her house for a picnic lunch…ahhh the good old days…LOL!!!
As an adult I remember visiting with her when my aunt did her hair, she told me about how she went to school for teaching. It was interesting speaking to her then as a college student!!!
To her family, she touched so many children’s lives and as you can see we are all a testment to her teaching and her lessons living on.
Thanks for the memories, Miss Wyatt!!!

I remember Gladys as a very good friend to my Grandmother and my self. We spent many a lunch at Grandmas Kitchen table having table talk ( stays there). I remember the year she gave me a jar of her homemade Mincemeat. It was so good.. She will be greatly missed.
