Eugene “Gene” W. Rector of Alamo passed away
Tuesday, August 28, 2007
at Rose Arbor Hospice in
Kalamazoo
. Gene was born
August 18, 1922
in
Kalamazoo
,
MI
the son of Walter and Vera (Youngs) Rector. He was a graduate of
Kalamazoo
Central
High School
and had attended MSU. He had been employed as a parts inspector many years by Fuller Mfg. and Eaton Group and he also farmed while working at Eaton. Gene served 30 years in the local government as a Kalamazoo County Commissioner and had served on the
Alamo
Township
zoning board and as a trustee, was the tax assessor for many years, served 20 years as the Alamo Township Supervisor and helped develop the
Alamo
Township
Park
. He worked as an aide to two state senators, Bob and Jack Welborn in
Lansing
. He was also a Trustee and Deacon at Alamo Congregational Church and was a current member of Otsego First Congregational Church. He was a Mason, a Shriner and was a secretary with the Oshtemo Grange and the Kalamazoo County Farm Bureau. Gene was also a leader for the N.W. Alamo 4-H Club where he taught leathercraft. He enjoyed traveling, photographing barns, gardening, leathercrafting, cooking, baking and making greeting cards on his computer. Gene married Eva Garrison on
April 20, 1945
in
Alamo
twp and together they raised four wonderful girls. He is survived by his wife Eva, by his daughters; Phyllis (James) Gary of Battle Creek, Nancy (Roger) Zeluff of Cooper, Patricia (Mark) Chapman and Gail (Michael) VanderWeele both of
Alamo
. Gene is also survived by 9 grandchildren and by 8 great grandchildren, his sister Arlene Loomis of MD and by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Hilden Rector. Cremation has taken place. On
Saturday, September 8, 2007
at the First Congregational Church of Otsego, the family will greet friends from
10:00
to11:00 AM at which time a memorial service will be held with Pastor William Walker and Rev. David Youngs officiating.
Memorials can be made to Rose Arbor Hospice or the
Alamo
Township
Park
.
