Elsa Nuyen-Strickland of Portage passed away Thursday, May 14, 2009 in Kalamazoo. Elsa was born October 2, 1923 in South Haven the daughter of William and Anna (Myner) Valkner. She had been employed at Beach Products for over 15 years and for Parker Hannifin in Richland for over 10 years and for Kal-equip for several years. She enjoyed motor home trips, camping, dancing, collecting frogs, raising roses and collecting stones from her camping trips. She married her first husband, Albert Nuyen in 1942 and he preceded her in death in 1977. On April 7, 1986 she married Dale Strickland who survives. Also surviving are daughters, Joy Hemmer, Joan (Dan) White, Jo (Terry) Bill; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild; a brother Bill, and Donna and Hermie who she raised; step children, Dale (Judy) Strickland, Roslind (Darrell) Plough, Wesley (Judy) Strickland; several nieces and nephews who loved her like a Grandma. Friends may meet with the family Tuesday, May 19 from Noon until the time of the Service at 1 P.M. At the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Celebrant Tim Secord Officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Home Cemetery, Otsego. In Lieu of Flowers Memorial Donations May be made to Borgess VNA & Hospice Services.
