Ellen N. Sisson of Otsego, Michigan, died peacefully Sunday, March 4, 2012, with her loving family by her side. Mrs. Sisson was born September 7, 1921 in Otsego to Fellus and Christina (Gydesen) Higby and was a graduate of Otsego High School.
Ellen’s father died when she was 10 months old and she became the most important part of her mother’s life. She grew up living in the Murray Hotel in downtown Otsego, where her mother was employed. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, counted cross stitch and other crafts, making things for all her family and friends. Ellen was an avid reader, especially history, so much so that the history reading room at the new Otsego library is named in her honor. Her family fondly remembers her macaroni and cheese, meatloaf and creamed potatoes, ham and egg casserole and her pastel cream cookies at Christmas. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great granddaughter were the most important part of her life. She loved her children’s mates as much as she loved her children.
On August 13, 1938 in Otsego she married Lyle “Red” Sisson, who died in 1994. Also preceding her in death were an infant son, Mark Sisson in 1950; and her young sister, Frances Higby in 1918.
Surviving are two sons and two daughters, Lyle “Skip” (Barb) Sisson of Sturgis, Barb (Pete) Jirgens of Kalamazoo, Craig (Lorna) Sisson of Otsego and Chris (Jim) McNutt of Allegan; 10 grandchildren, Rob (Theresa), Julie (Jerry), Kathy (Mike), Eric (Allan), Scott (Shelly), Sarah (Mark), Stephen (Abby), Adam (Missy), Jenni (Corby) and Jimmy; 24 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter. Also surviving are many, many relatives in Upstate New York.
Friends may visit with Ellen’s family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the
Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego
. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at the First Congregational Church of Otsego, Pastor David Youngs and Pastor Joe Shaler officiating. Cremation will follow the services with burial of ashes at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego.
Contributions in memory of Ellen may be made to the
Otsego District Public Library
or the First Congregational Church of Otsego.

Your Mother was a great person who I enjoyed talking to very much and she was still sharp as a tack at the last Sisson reunion. I didn’t know she was raised in a hotel or that she made such good cookies. I would have mooched some cookies off of her.
.Arlene broke her other leg femur near the other hip two weeks ago. She had a partial hip replacement and is now in a rehab facility. i have been sick from too much time at hospital and rehab and not enough sleep.I am sorry I cannot attend. The Kathryn Rachor family will be making a contribution to the library in her name.

Aunt Ellen was a favorite of ours.
She always had a welcome smile for us. We’ll cherish the last reunion when we got to see and hug her and the visit to the family homestead. It is a great memory. I remember your parents visits to our home on many occasions. The family group always had a lot of fun together. She is the last aunt to die. We feel the better for the memories and so glad she didnt have to suffer.
All the Sissons are having a great time together once again.
We are in Florida so unable to attend the funeral. Hugs to all of you.
Love
Denny & Kaaren

Chris, Craig, Lorna and family –
My fond memories of Ellen go back 60 years now – from birthday parties to picnics in our back yard or at Pine Lake. She was always smiling and in and out of our house for so many years. The last of one of the greatest friendship groups ever – Ellen, Vyvyan, Ruth, Ike and Kate. A generation gone, but never forgotten. May your memories bring you many smiles and comfort in your loss.
My very best to you all – Judy

Blessings on you as you grieve for you Mother, Grandmother and Great grandmother. I remember Ellen as a gracious and caring lady. My son Mark was born on her birthday 9-7-1961 and she always said she felt like she had part ownership in him. She always made the friends of Barb feel very much home in her house. Your memories will be very precious to you.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Aunt Ellen. The Sisson family has lost its matriarch and that responsibility has now fallen to the next generation. Aunt Ellen and I spent many hours talking about ‘books”. She was always so soft spoken and interested in what I was reading and in talking to me about what she was reading. I really believe she inspired me to go to college and pass my love of learning to my future students and children.
Ellen’s legacy is evident in her children, their spouses and their children. I remember seeing the entire family at her house doing the fall maintenance work. I have always admired the commitment of the Sisson family to each other and to their mom.
Ellen, it saddens me to learn of your passing. I know you are now receiving your just reward in heaven being united with Lyle and many new beloved books.

I’m so sorry to hear that my Aunt Ellen is no longer with us, but know that she is in a better place now – safe in the hands of God. She was very special to me and always treated me with love and respec. I’m not sure if any of you know that my first daughter was named after her – Jane Ellen. I thank God that I was able to share in her life and know that she will be missed by all those who knew and loved her. Love, Trudy

We are saddened by the loss of Aunt Ellen. We had so much fun when we were in Florida and spent the day with her and Uncle Lyle playing 18 holes of golf and lunch. We had lots of laughs that day. It was so nice that she was able to attend the Sisson cousin reunion a couple of years ago. We have great pictures of her enjoying her nieces and nephews, I think she really loved being there. She was a wonderful lady and will be missed by all.

There were many fine aunts for me to choose from in the Sisson clan. Ellen had qualities that put her at the top.
I remember stopping by to say Hi once in the 80s and she ended up feeding the 3 people in the car with me.
She complimented well the analytic side of her husband. Her greatest gift surely was her parenting skills as evidenced by her fine descendants.
She will will be missed, and rests in the Lord.

So deeply sorry to learn of your mothers passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I so enjoyed reading her x-mas cards every year and catching up on the latest hometown news. She would always end the card by saying “Remember our Christmas Eves”? Truly she will be missed.

Thinking of you all. Ellen was so very special to Lee and I. She was the first person we met when we moved to Bayberry and she was the one that came over often to visit when we were lonesome for our friends where we used to live. Always enjoyed talking with her as her conversation was always interesting (never about her health problems which I’m sure she had many) I know you have many great memories to see you thru this sad time.
Good by Dear Friend. You will be missed.

I will always remember Ellen’s friendliness, pretty face and warm smile.I met your mother when she was a clerk at the Dime store. We discovered that the two of us loved The Stillmeadow books written by Gladys Tabor..we both collected them and I remember how thrilled she was when she learned that we had actually visited Stillmeadow Farm in Connecticut. My last contact with her was when I wrote to her on her 90th. birthday and she responded with a card for our 70th anniversary. Both in September. I will miss you Ellen!
My condolences to the family. She was a sweetheart of a person.

To my dear Sisson, Jirgens and McNutt families,
I feel though not related, you have always made me a part of your families. Ellen was such a wonderful lady and such a wonderful neighbor as I was growing up. She would be the one house that I knew I could go to to sell my Girl Scout Cookies. I loved being able to see her later in these past few years out with Yvonne Earl. They were quite a pair. She had an amazing spirit about her that does not come along often. My heart is with each and every one of you. Just know my prayers are with you. Much love and peace! Lauri XO
