Duane passed away, Friday, December 22, 2023, at his home in Kalamazoo.
He was born March 7, 1959, in Ypsilanti, the son of Daniel and Florence (Shepherd) Smith. Duane proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked at Hayworth, Perrigo and several other area businesses as a forklift operator.
He was a member of the Dorr American Legion and enjoyed discussing world events. Duane wasn’t afraid to voice his opinion on politics or any other subject. He liked taking the back roads, hunting, trips to the casino, traveling up north to Irons and attending the truck and car show in St. Ignace. Duane was a loyal Green Bay Packers and U of M fan. He loved spending time with his family and his dogs. On July 10, 2021 he married Becky Brenner who survives.
Also surviving are his step-sons, Brandon Herp of Oshtemo, Chad Brenner of Otsego and Jason (Jennifer) Brenner of Otsego; grandchildren, Christopher, Donavan and Makayla; 6 siblings and their spouses, Glenn, Daniel, Ronda, Wade, Kim and Mark Smith along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Kathleen Herp-Smith.
Friends may visit with Duane’s family starting at 10:00 A.M., Friday, December 29, 2023, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 A.M., with Pastor Ray Brown officiating.
Burial will follow at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego.
Contributions in memory of Duane may be made to the
American Cancer Society
or the Kalamazoo Humane Society.

We always gave each other crap but you know I loved you very much. You were very kind yet often too opinionated but you spoke the truth even if it hurt to hear it. You made Becky so happy and we thank you for that! Rest high on that mountain for work on earth is done. ❣️
