Donald Trautman

Donald Trautman, formerly of Otsego, passed away in Florida on November, 2014 after a long illness.

Don was the owner and pharmacist of Otsego Drug for more than 29 years. Don cherished the people in the community that he served for so many years. In addition to his work, he enjoyed collecting coins, fishing, golfing, gardening and playing shuffleboard (and even achieved a semi-pro ranking in the State of Florida). He was thoughtful about politics and local issues and enjoyed expressing his opinions in many letters to the editors of local newspapers.

Prior to his pharmacy career, Don achieved the rank of Lt. in the US Navy, serving in the Korean War which took him to all corners of the world.

He was married to Ruth for 63 years and she survives him. They were married in Michigan and then lived in Hawaii for two years before making their way back home. Also surviving him is his daughter, Kathy and her husband Randy. Don and Ruth’s son, Steven, preceded him .

Don was passionately concerned about a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease and contributions in memory of Don can be made to the

My very first boss, and a darn good one!!! I ran a paper route for Don for a couple years. A fine man and person, he taught me a great deal about accountability and responsibility at a very young age. I will pray for his family, sorry for your loss.

I was lucky enough to work for Don at Rexall during high school and he was a dear man , one of the best. He taught me how to work with the public and to always treat a customer like I would want to be treated . Good advice from a good man. Kathy and Ruth, I’m so sorry for your loss but just know Don cherished his family. When I saw him over the years he always talked about you all first and THEN about his coin collections.

Don was my first employer. He gave me a paper route after I shared with him how I had just broken my skateboard and my Mom told me not to come home till I got a job. He laughed! I owe him a lot of what he taught me, about integrity, and accountability, and work ethic. Now that I’m older, I enjoy puffing a pipe, and often remember the way the pharmacy smelled, as it was from the time where pharmacies sold pipes and tobacco in bulk, ha ha!
