David R. Holmes

David R. Holmes of Otsego, Michigan passed away Monday, July 16, 2012, at his home. Dave was born July 21, 1944 in Toledo, OH to Grant and Ernestine (Radsick) Holmes. From 1961 to 1981 he served his country in the US Navy. He was a Life Member of V.F.W. and a member of the U.S.S. Little Rock Association. Dave retired from the U.S. Navy in 1981, but he fully retired in 2008 with his wife, Bev. They moved into their motor home and became full-timers! The first year on the road took them to 27 states, which Bev chronicled on their blog. Eventually they settled in the RV in summers at Schnable Lake Campground in Otsego and winters in Las Vegas or Florida, traveling wherever they wanted on the road in between.

On November 25, 1977 in Otsego he married Beverly Ann Hoyt, who survives. Also surviving are 1 son and 2 daughters, Daniel Holmes of Traverse City, Kimberly (James) Hall of Bonney Lake, WA, Michele (Brett) Everson of Graham, WA; 5 grandchildren, Andrew Charles, Kyle Everson, Heather Hall, Adrienne Holmes and Ellery Holmes; a brother, James E. (Gaye) Holmes of Hayden, AL; a sister, Faye Ann (Harold) Rickabaugh of Spring lake; nieces and nephews, Dawn, Paula, Jimmy, Lea, Julie, Sarah, Aaron, Brian, Audrey, Amy, Michael, Justin, Rebecca, Timothy, EJ, Tamara, Elizabeth, Samantha, Kody, and Kyle; and great nieces and nephews, Aaron, April, Amanda, Deanna, Grant, Katherine, Elinor, John, Mickala, Joseph, Wade, Emilee, Racheal, Rebekka, Claudia, Alyssa, Kasi, Anna, Richard, Bailey, Dominiq, Rylee, Mason, Carson, Ethan, Shelby, Brennan; good friends, Bruce and Lynda LaFountain and their family, James, Vicki, Audra and Hannah all of Otsego.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Holmes; a sister, Mary Lucinda Klosinski; and a great nephew, Jesse Tyminski.

Friends may meet with his family on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. at

Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego

, where funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, Pastor David Reed officiating. Military Honors by VFW Post #3030 and the U.S. Navy. Cremation will follow. Burial of ashes with Military Honors at Fort Custer National Cemetery will be held Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at 1:30 P.M.

Bev – What memories you must have for the years you and Dave shared. He was loved by all that knew him. That smile, that laugh, that never being at a loss for a story to tell. I will surely miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this terribly hard time.

My brother was truly one of a kind. He was funny, loving and always there to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He will be missed by all who lives he touched. Rest in Peace DEAR BROTHER. Now he is with Mom, Dad and Cindy. Love to all he left behind especially Bev, Dan, Kim, Shelly and their children.

Bev, This is Bob, I used to work with Dave at Bill Marsh Used Car Tech. I am so sorry to hear of Dave’s passing, but I am glad that you guys got to do what he said he wanted to with the motor home retirement.

He was one of a kind for sure, and he, John, and myself had many great lunchtimes together !!

He will be missed, but never forgotten for sure…………Bob
