This makes me so sad for Otsego. We always saw Darin playing sports and spending time with his daughter. He was an amazing father! He was also a favorite teacher for our kids. Darin always had time to chat when we seen him around town. He would always ask what the kids were up too. You could always tell he was a genuine person that really cared.

Many prayers for his daughter, his parents, his students and our community. RIP Darin.

Dear Stephanie, Paul, Deana, Greg, Jeff, Kennedy and Family,

Words can not adequately express the sympathy we have for all of you at this time. We have so many wonderful memories of Darin as he grew up in Three Oaks, along with other members of the RV Class of 88. I can still see him zipping down the basketball court with determination and purpose in mind. He was a wonderful athlete to watch in all of the sports he played. More than that, he was such a good person. We have had the opportunity to see him at different sporting events over the years and our visits with him then were always wonderful. His passing has left a terrible void for all who knew him, but especially for his family. Know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers during the following days and always.

Enjoyed talking baseball with Darin when I was in Otsego. He always had a smile for me and was such a kind guy. My fondest memory would be the little notes he’d leave on my desk as the energy auditor about sports and just words of encouragement I would find on my desk the next school day. He was such a blessing to myself and so many others.

Mr. Price was the most kindhearted, soft-spoken, and comforting teacher to be around. He taught my computer class back in sixth grade – 2006 – and never ran out of patience for us, and that’s saying a lot for a group of rowdy 12-year-olds! He always had a smile and a kind word when I saw him around town, too. He will be so missed.

Coach Price,

I think back to when you gave me the opportunity to play on the “A” team In 8th grade. You told me one thing that’s always stuck in my head, and that was to “prove yourself”. I’m at a loss of words. While coaching middle school basketball for the last couple of years, I could always count on you to share, critique, and cherish the memories that were made. You made me a better basketball coach, someone that kids could count on through the ups and downs, and an even better person. Darin, you always gave me the best advice I could ever ask for and I will always, always remember that through my time. Thank you for being you, and thank you for teaching me the core values. I will forever be thankful for you and for what you taught me.

God Bless,

Evan

I’m so sorry to his family for their loss. He touched a lot of lives in his time in Otsego. As a 7th grader in 1995 I was on the OMS basketball team. Mr Price was one of our regular referees. He always had an encouraging word for me and knew me by name just from constantly handing me the ball to inbound. I was lucky enough the following year to have him as a full time coach and teacher. He had a way of inspiring us without having to raise his voice. We all just respected him and didn’t want to let him down. I have a sixth grader start at OMS this year who was super excited to get to be in Mr Price’s gym class after all that he had heard from me. This will be a huge loss to our schools and community. We will miss him greatly.

In our 8th grade basketball banquet Darin said “If I could put 5 Dereks on the court I’d never lose because we’d out hustle the other team every night”. This was maybe the nicest thing a coach ever said about me. When I was coaching freshmen basketball at Hackett he reffed a few of my games. Joking he said , “ex-players don’t get preferential calls.” He was one of the best coaches I ever had and one of the best men I knew.

The news of Darin’s passing was shocking and so sad. As a freshman baseball player at WMU, Darin was a senior. Typically a senior wouldn’t want anything to do with a freshman. Darin however took extra time to make sure all of us freshman were doing ok, had rides where we needed them, and spent time with us to make sure we felt welcomed. Grew up with Darin and his family. Top people, and throughout the years Darin was no different. Always respectful, kind, and humble.

Condolences to his family and friends, hope you can find peace in this difficult time.

Heartfelt gratitude for getting a chance to meet such a great person at River Valley High long ago, even more thankful to watch Darin quietly..with a smile always..teach, mentor and coach students at Otsego years later, including my own. The amount of people that have been blessed by Darins footprint on this earth must be staggering, not enough words can describe our sadness-or admiration Darin. God Bless you, Rest in Peace

Darin was a great teacher and mentor. While in college he reached out to me to see if I would be interested coaching JV baseball with him. It was a great experience. Seeing first hand his dedication and love for his players. Seeing his work ethic. Darin was a genuine good hearted person. We will be praying for the Price family.

I am still shocked with this sad news as I write this. I knew Darin through the many Physical Education and basketball coaching clinics. He also reffed many of my basketball games when I was coaching varsity basketball. He was always open and caring for the coaches, fans, players and friends. Darin was one heck of a guy. A true genuine coach, teacher, father and friend. My deepest sympathies to the whole price family.

Darin’s contribution of his heart and his leadership, character will be a lasting legacy of the light he shared with others thru his Joyful example of mentoring so many many in the classroom and on the Sports field. He cared deeply about our Son’s and Daughter’s success in academics and Coached our Son’s in Baseball. He played a role in Collegiate Baseball Dreams being achieved as well as College Success. We not only were Blest by his role within OPS but also by sharing our Faith with him at our Parish in Otsego. He was a wonderful Father, Friend, Coach and Man of Character. We send our Deepest Sympathy to your family ~ We pray that you feel God’s Love, Strength, Peace and find comfort in all the memories of the impact of his life ~ We are so Thankful to have been Blest by Him. My heart is broken along with everyone else that knew and loved Darin Price. The Golden Boy of River Valley. Little brother to Greg and Jeff, Deana’s twin and Steph’s baby boy with the beautiful sky blue eyes. What a loss for the family and community. Reading all of these tributes hurts so much but also makes me smile for a young man that truly left his mark on this world and in so many impressionable young lives. What an awesome teacher and coach he was, one I would be so proud to have had for any of my own children. He was raised right, he was loved, he was admired. I hope all of that lives on in his beautiful daughter as well. God Bless the family as they try and cope with this devastating loss, I love you all.

I met Darin during his first year of teaching at OMS. I was working as an aide to special needs students. My heart just breaks for his family, daughter, friends, and co-workers. He was such a kind, gentle, and humble man. His patience was remarkable. Not only did he show great respect for the staff, but also for the students. The boys admired his love for sports, and of course, the young girls swooned over his good looks. Otsego has lost a significant part of their teaching staff with Darin’s death. Even though it’s been many years since I worked at OMS, I can still hear him greet me as we passed in the hallways, “Hey Mrs. K.” He will missed by many.

My family and I were shocked and saddened to hear of Darin’s passing.

I feel like I knew Darin on several different fronts. He taught three of our kids in middle school. We would see him at church with Kennedy. As the energy manager for the district, he would report out to the board on progress. Whether seeing him at school, church or board meetings, Darin had a way of making me feel better after our interactions. He had that gift. I pulled up a few emails that Darin sent the board and he used words like talent, passion, commitment and positivity. Those are the exact words that I would use to describe Darin. He set the standard for treating people the way we should all treat each other.

I know that we will always remember Darin’s smile, positive energy, obvious love for Kennedy and his passion for Otsego students and community. Rest in peace.

Dear Stephanie and Family, most of you won’t know who I am but I am Donna Heckathorn’s sister. At the time when the RV boys were tearing it up on the basketball court, my husband and I were big fans and liked going to games when we could. Jason and his friends would go to my mom’s house and watch football and other sports in her tv room. It was just a small room and they would close the door and have their snacks and and could get as loud as they wanted. Little did they know how much it pleased my mom that they felt comfortable being there. We would all laugh about it, and my mom said the room smelled like a locker room. Darin was often one of those boys.

My heart truly aches for you.

RIP Darin.

What special memories the River Valley community has of Darin’s amazing performances on the basketball court and baseball diamond and his joy of competition. I have even better memories of the type of person Darin was throughout his life. He was a loving father to Kennedy, wonderful son and brother to his family and an amazing friend, colleague, coach and teacher to everyone else. His giving spirit came through in every relationship. Darin’s influence will carry on in everyone who had the good fortune to cross paths with him throughout his life. It hurts to say goodbye my friend! RIP Darin.

No words can adequately describe the heartbreak and loss.

For me, Darin gathered the best qualities of his parents and went 50 years down a path exuding a smiling, fun loving, approachable, gentle and generous character that was unequalled. I always enjoyed our time together and looked forward to the next time. Never a harsh moment between us. Just love and laughter. He had a special gift to bring out the best in people.

In the face of the infinite sadness in losing Darin, I know (as with Uncle Fred) there is no getting over this. We will need to rally around and lean on one another to carry on. Providing all the love, support and faith Kennedy and the family will need.

R.I.P Darin

Shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Darin’s passing, I had the distinct privilege of refereeing with Darin over the past many years in Basketball and early on in my career in Baseball. Darin was an excellent Official and a dream to referee when he was coaching. I have nothing but respect and great things to say about Darin which make this whole situation even tougher. My thoughts and prayers are with Kennedy and the rest of Darin’s family in this time of great sadness and loss. RIP my dear friend, God must have needed another Angel in Heaven or a Coach or a Referee, Darin meets the qualifications for all three.

It was my pleasure and privilege to be a colleague of Darin Price’s at OMS for seven years. He was a “go getter,” a self starter, a caring, professional teacher and coach. I admired his work ethic, as well as his persona.

I don’t recall the exact year, but he led a talented girls’ basketball team to the championship! Who was hitting those 3 pointers from the corner? Awesome!

May he find peace.

Even if i didn’t know him very well as soon as i heard the news i cried for at least 2 hours. He was an awesome teacher and i always looked forward to telling him what plans i had for the week. Even if i wasn’t the best at gym and was difficult to cooperate with he still always put a smile on my face. He was one of the only teachers i actually had genuine conversations with. He helped me when i couldn’t do something and supported my decisions. i can easily say he is by far one of my favorite teachers. i’m sad he’s gone and I hope that his family can get through it in this rough period of time. losses are hard especially when its someone that touched so many people. Mr.price made gym fun it was the only class id ever had actual fun in. most times i’m really self conscious but he included everyone so i actually felt comfortable. Though i am sad he’s gone i will continue to try new things and believe in myself more. I can safely say that he made my life feel less lonely and i cant ever thank him enough for it

Deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Darin. We were hired into Otsego Middle School the same year, and taught next to each other when I was there. One of the most caring, and compassionate teachers. He was so well liked and respected by those around him. The students enjoyed his classes. He was so much fun to be around. I enjoyed seeing him after I had left Otsego, at many sporting events as a referee. He was always friendly with everyone around him. He will be missed greatly. I am sorry it has taken me this long to come back and tell you how much I should have said awhile ago. Mr. Price, you did so much for me, you made sure that made it through 6th grade. You stood by my side till the end. You always told me to keep my head high. To never doubt myself. To keep going even when the world is beating you down. So this part is to his family, don’t stop living your life. Keep going. Don’t give up. Even when no one believes in you, you can change the world. Don’t forget that.

Wishing you the best
