Christopher Smit

Christopher Smit of Plainwell passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013 in Allegan. Mr. Smit was born February 18, 1929 in Kalamazoo to Christopher and Velma (Rutledge) Smit. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Christopher was member of the First Baptist Church of Plainwell and in his leisure time he enjoyed woodworking, reading and crossword puzzles. On March 28, 1952 at the Cooper Baptist Church he married Marilyn Kelly who survives. Also surviving are his children Chris (Anita) Smit of Alfred, ME, Mark (Nancy) Smit of Plainwell, Laurel (Tim) Marsh of Kalamazoo and Lon Smit of Paw Paw; 9 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a sister, Lynn (Fred) Yager and a sister-in-law, Judy Smit. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Herman Smit.

Friends may visit with Chris’s family from 3 to 5 P.M. Sunday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Private services will be held at a later time. Burial will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. Contributions in memory of Chris may be made to

Sorry for your loss. Memories of the old Pontiac station wagon and swimming at Gun Lake, sharing summer rentals at Pine Lake and up north, Diamond Lake I believe.
