Charles ‘Homer’ Shaffer of Otsego, Michigan, passed away

. Mr. Shaffer was born
October 19, 1925
, in
Hastings
to Wesley and Hattie (DeLong) Shaffer. During his freshman and sophomore years at
Otsego
High School
he set multiple athletic records in track and field, football and basketball. Prior to joining the U.S. Marine Corps and serving during World War II and the Korean War, Homer owned and operated a local gas station. After his discharge from the Marines he began distributing Michigan Cottage Cheese and that grew into a partnership in Bernea Food Service in 1978. After his retirement in 1984, he and his wife, Nadene, traveled extensively in their motor home. Other leisure activities he enjoyed were flying his own airplane, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, golfing and especially spending time with his family. On
June 21, 1946
, he married the former
Nadene
M. Ladd, with whom he celebrated 63 years of marriage. Also surviving are two daughters,
Rhonda (Pat) McGonagle
of Florida and Jackie (Gordon) Stineback of Otsego; four grandchildren, Jodi (Maurice) Lelii of
Florida
, Scott (Brooke) Hinz, of
Florida
, Jamie (Josh) Jameson of Otsego and Amie (Jesse) Proctor of Plainwell; 11 great-grandchildren. Vincent, Jerin, Macy, Jayden, Ethan, Kaylin, Michaela, Evan, Gabrielle, Allie and Elliot; a sister-in-law,
Jackie Ladd
, of Otsego; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother, Irene, Hilda, Beulah and Howard. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at
11:00 A.M.
Tuesday at the
Winkel Funeral Home,
Otsego,
with funeral celebrant, Bill Rose, officiating. Military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post #3030. Contributions in memory of Homer may be made to the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.
