Bessie Rachel Martin

Bessie Rachel (Brown) of Otsego, Michigan, passed away at her Otsego home on Tuesday, May 4, 2010, surrounded by her family along with her dog and companion, Bubba. Bess was born July 1, 1922 in Otsego to Guy and FrayAnna (Straub) Brown. Known to many as Auntie Bee, she was a lifelong resident of the community of Otsego and will be truly missed. She was a lifetime member of ‘The Big 4’ Harness Racing Association and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2002 as the first woman ever honored this way. Bess loved worshiping God. In her leisure time she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, knitting, crocheting, Tiger’s baseball, horse racing, hunting, fishing and bird watching. Auntie Bee, we will love you always. On March 28, 1941 in Bryan, OH, she married the love of her life, Robert Lee Martin, who preceded her in death in 1987. Also preceding her in death were her daughter, Sally Jo Martin, and her sister, Ellen Parsons. Surviving are a son Thomas Lee (RuthAnn) Martin, Sr. ; 6 grandchildren, Peter (Penny) Martin, Thomas Lee Martin, Jr., Sarah (Harold) Hammond, Michele (Donald) Anderson III, Terry Knot and Matthew Dugan; 15 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren. Friends may meet with Bess’s family on Friday from 4-8pm at the

Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Entombment at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park will be on Saturday. A memorial service and dinner will be held Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at the Family Worship Center, 5841 East ‘H’ Avenue, Kalamazoo, Pastor Curt Dalaba and Pastor E. Lane Davis officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Family Worship Center, Building Fund.
