Aaron James “Jim” “Aj” Commissaris
Aaron James “Jim” “AJ” Commissaris was born October 19, 1945 in Salem Township, the son of Abram and Henrietta (Kuiper) Commissaris. Jim served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War and had worked for General Motors until his retirement in 1990.
In 1987 Jim married Jacque Nulty Drobny and lived in the Allegan area. They were active members of the Allegan County Mounted Division where Jim served as Captain; he was also a charter member and President of the Allegan County Pleasure Riders for many years. In 2009 Jim was given the Public Safety Person of the Year Award presented by the Allegan Area Chamber of Commerce.
Jim is the brother of Cliff (Thelma) Commissaris, Jean (Roger) Kamphuis, Ron (Carol) Commissaris, Harriett (Jerry) Nickrent and Bob (Nancy) Commissaris; the father of Jamie (Jamielynne) Commissaris; proud grandfather of Trevor and Teagan Commissaris, Carly and Erica Drobny, Abigail and Emma Owens and Morgan and Chase Drobny; step-father to Chad (Sally) Drobny, Marni Drobny, and Matthew (Kelli) Drobny; he also leaves behind, Linda Commissaris, mother of his son Jamie, and many nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, young sister, teen brother, and infant triplet grandsons.
Jim’s passion was his family and his many friends, his horses and playing cards. No day was an idle day. Jim could always find something to do and someone to help. Jim’s life journey has ended. He will be missed and will always be more than a memory.
Friends may visit with Jim’s family Wednesday, June 18, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where a funeral service will take place Thursday at11:00 A.M., Todd Meert officiating. Burial with Military Honors by VFW Post #3030 and a tribute by the Allegan County Sheriff’s Department Mounted Division will follow at Mallory Cemetery, Trowbridge Township on M-40.

We met Jim when John joined the mounted division.He became an idol to our kids,Desiree’ and Max.Every time Jim got a new pair of boots,they had to get a pair just like his.They role played him,right down to a toothpick for his cigarette.We all have alot of good memories of Jim at the fair,on trailrides and just a nice guy.He will be missed by our family,but always in our memories. May God bless the family and we will keep you in our prayers.

Memories are all we have left of Jimmy. And I luckily have some good ones. I think of all the times Jim and Jacque, Chuck Pullen and I marked the trails for our annual ride-a-thon. Eating lunch on the trails and laughing. Rain, snow or sunshine. Or the time I desperately needed to borrow a horse to post parade the harness races with and Jimmy offered me his own posse horse. He said to me,” This horse might throw in a buck or two when asked to canter but he will parade them horses” Well he was right. That big buckskin did parade those horses and he did throw in a couple of bucks!!! Yes the memories are what we all need to hold onto now. My heart is with the entire family. Yet when I think of Jimmy it’s with a smile.

First got to know Jim by working with him in the Sheriff’s Dept. Mounted Division, but we quickly became friends. I always had a deep respect and admiration for Jim and came to realize that he was a friend that you always count on. Everyone in the Law Enforcement Community will miss his leadership abilities and his quick smile.

Favorite memory – Jim standing on the back of his beautiful buckskin stapling paper plate markers for the ride so kids couldnt reach them to pull down. The one thing I will always remember about Jim is that he always had the biggest smile on his face no matter when you saw him. He always had the time to say hello. His smile was contagious. To the entire family of Jim. I went to Hillcrest Grade School with many of the Commisaris family. When I was little, Jim was my protector of all things bully. We all went through the schoolyard rights of passaage. But I had Jim looking out for me. I rode my bike nearly every good-weather day with Bob. Jim and Bob were the definition of brothers. They could laugh and they could fight. But they were true brothers to the core. What I remember most about Jim was that eye-squinting smile. I don’t remember seeing Jim not smile. Words cannot express the sadness I feel for each of you….from the Commisaris’s at the top of the hill all the way down to the Commisaris’s at the bottom of the hill. Seems like i rode my bike home from school down that long hill, from Cliff’s almost to Ron’s and all Commisarises in between. May God’s PEACE console you. Remember always, our ways are not His ways. And His ways are not our ways. He is there for Jim. ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding’ Proverbs 3:5.

Memories are all we have left of Jimmy. And I luckily have some good ones. I think of all the times Jim and Jacque, Chuck Pullen and I marked the trails for our annual ride-a-thon. Eating lunch on the trails and laughing. Rain, snow or sunshine. Or the time I desperately needed to borrow a horse to post parade the harness races with and Jimmy offered me his own posse horse. He said to me,” This horse might throw in a buck or two when asked to canter but he will parade them horses” Well he was right. That big buckskin did parade those horses and he did throw in a couple of bucks!!! Yes the memories are what we all need to hold onto now. My heart is with the entire family. Yet when I think of Jimmy it’s with a smile.

First got to know Jim by working with him in the Sheriff’s Dept. Mounted Division, but we quickly became friends. I always had a deep respect and admiration for Jim and came to realize that he was a friend that you always count on. Everyone in the Law Enforcement Community will miss his leadership abilities and his quick smile.

I knew Jim in Jr. High and High School and had not seen him in 50 years but met up with him at last years fair. We struck up a conversation like no time had passed at all. Nice guy. Terribly sorry for your loss.

My condolences Jaque and family. Been 9 yrs since I rode with y’all I remember Jims humor and riding trails with you both. Favorite memory – Jim standing on the back of his beautiful buckskin stapling paper plate markers for the ride so kids couldnt reach them to pull down. Such a great loss, much light and love to you all

sorry to hear that Jim passed away it was a stock to us we knew him when we join the Allegan County Pleasure Riders several years ago we had great times camping with him at silvers creak and also his house he was always be in our hearts and will be miss him dearly our thought and prayers are with the family may he R.I.P forever

The one thing I will always remember about Jim is that he always had the biggest smile on his face no matter when you saw him. He always had the time to say hello. His smile was contagious. Praying for your family through this great loss of a great man. He will be remembered with fond memories. May you find peace in those memories and may God hold you all in His arms at this time.

To the entire family of Jim. I went to Hillcrest Grade School with many of the Commisaris family. When I was little, Jim was my protector of all things bully. We all went through the schoolyard rights of passaage. But I had Jim looking out for me. I rode my bike nearly every good-weather day with Bob. Jim and Bob were the definition of brothers. They could laugh and they could fight. But they were true brothers to the core. What I remember most about Jim was that eye-squinting smile. I don’t remember seeing Jim not smile. Words cannot express the sadness I feel for each of you….from the Commisaris’s at the top of the hill all the way down to the Commisaris’s at the bottom of the hill. Seems like i rode my bike home from school down that long hill, from Cliff’s almost to Ron’s and all Commisarises in between. May God’s PEACE console you. Remember always, our ways are not His ways. And His ways are not our ways. He is there for Jim. ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding’ Proverbs 3:5.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family. I grew up with Jim (and Bob). Had tons of fun, mostly riding horses. Sorry we couldn’t be there, as we were out of state.
